To be an actuary....

I was just randomly thinking about this, it seems like a very interesting profession. I'm probably not going to major in actuarial science, but I just wanted to learn more about it, if anyone knows any information. It would be very helpful to me if you could answer some questions or give me some general information about this career. Basically, I'm good at calculus, precalculus, and algebra. I'm not really great at geometry - I kind of hate it.

I was wondering how much math an actuary has to learn, what type of courses/how many math courses they have to take in college, etc. What type of math does the profession involve - and do you HAVE to be a mathematical genius?

What types of math are there beyond calculus?

Well, thanks!

bump? thanks :)

Check out the Society of Actuaries' website www.soa.org. There are many links describing the career and other links helpful to students. As far as math, you need to know calculus, probability and statistics in order to pass the exams. I never used geometry. Actuaries work in many different areas in insurance, consulting or government, so what you need to know will vary by that. It is helpful to have a general business background, a strong background in accounting, computer software (especially excel, word, and access) and good problem solving skills. Good luck to you.
