I am pondering whether or not to bring my car to college. I am afraid that once I find a parking place I won't want to lose the place and my car will just sit there for months getting fried from the sun and dings from car doors. On the other hand I can't imagine going there without my beloved vehicle, it seems like a waste to leave it at home. I need some advice from those who have been there done that.

I'm in the same boat....and unless you have a garage where you lived, it was already sitting in the sun everywhere it was...and a lot of UF has parking garages, so unless you're in the roof, not much to worry. What term are you starting?

I start fall 2008 and i'm living in a dorm

summer B and dorm for me...I would say bring it for fall...I'm not sure for summer for me...what do u think?

I would bring a car for summer. Parking spaces are abundant and the buses do not run as frequently as in the fall. Plus it's kind of hot so walking any farther than half a mile is unpleasant.

i think im going to be hot a lot. im leaving my car at home so my little brother has something to drive to school with and what not. so all im bringing is my bike.

good to bring your bike. its so fast during the day and you can park right outside your classes.

the on campus bus system is good for this too tho, if you get tired of riding your bike or discover that the buses run where you need them to.

as for bringing your car.. i would say if no one is gonna use it at home, bring it... what dorm are you gonna be in?

there are garages where you can park, and if you want to go get groceries or anything, a car is a big help. carrying that stuff on the bus sucks.

im getting a scooter! but im an athlete and thats what they all do.

The cars at UF, especially in the red lots (Freshman) get really scraped up because 1. the parking spots are very narrow
2. kids drive in a out of them in all states of mind (think liquour) and
3. some kids just don't have a lot of driving experience

My daughter's car, which was in pristine condition when she left for UF, got very dinged up and scraped up (back sides) while parked in the parking garage by the Physics building (the closest freshman parking to broward hall).

She loved having her car but...she hates the scrapes on it.

File an insurance claim then...pay your deductable only if the damages are worth more than it...

There are ways to minimize getting damage such as parking away from other cars...top floor...end spots...bend your mirrors in.

"There are ways to minimize getting damage such as parking away from other cars...top floor...end spots...bend your mirrors in."

All good ideas but alas, not always an option. My D spent many many nights driving around the garage in circles hunting for a spot...beggars can't be choosers. At some times of day, spots are plentiful but many times you really have to be patient and take what you can get.

cant cars get dinged up in any college parking lot? or any parking lot in the world?

good point ;)
