to california community college students only

Does anyone feel that CCC put too much emphasis on transferring to CSU and UCs, I mean Im sure there great school and all but they arent for everyone. Everytime I try to see a counselor they give me atttitude and look down upon me for trying to transfer to a private school. Its really ****ing me off. There is too much info on CSU and UCs and not enough on private schools. I feel its imbalanced and unfair. Who agrees or disagrees, all opinions accepted.

When CCC's get funding from private schools, then they can emphasize the private education. Until then, I am happy they gave me the oppurtunity to transfer to a world class UC school. BTW, I was accepted to a private school too, and the transfer counselor was more than willing to help.

community college counselors, in my experience, are generally complete and total asshats. They are devoid of any sort of higher-level thinking and only have knowledge that is publicly accessible (i.e. the school catalog)

For example, I had a transfer agreement to UC Davis that the counselor at American River College LOST AND NEVER TURNED IN. Because of that, I was admitted a quarter after I was supposed to be.

Yes, they are heavily biased towards UC and CSU because the agreements are already set up and they don't have to do any more work or put undue stress on their rusty and atrophied neurons.

If you want to transfer to a school, even if it is a UC or CSU, talk to counselors there. They will most likely have the best information.

What private are you trying to transfer to?

At my CC, many people try to transfer to USC and LMU and the likes.

If you're trying to transfer to an elite private (Stanford, Ivies etc.), they might think your a pretentious bastard (just because its so rare people try to transfer to those schools).

yea about USC, i get the feeling that USC is CC transfer friendly..am i right?

i know USC doesn't give CC students priority, but how tough is it to get into USC from a CC?

Not too sure how hard is it to get into USC from CCC, but my school places heavy emphasises(sp?) on transfers to UC, CSU and USC. My school(Glendale Community College) is like top two source for CC student transfer to USC, says so on the official USC transfer handbook too.

dancinlaughin your counselour sounds like an ******* :/

I'm in EOPs and the counselours there are extremely, extremely helpful, way better than the counselour I had in high school. I know about three counselours there, and each has their own different "counseling" styles, I'd say, I always try to hear what each of them have to say, but there's one that I go to more because he's just the best one there for me, extremely helpful, will go out of the way and help me, spends like 40 minutes for each counselling session, always replies to my emails, never rushes when I'm on the appointment, now that's a counselour that's hard to find. If I get into UCLA(which I hope to), I'm giving him a thank you gift basket for his great help throughout my GCC career.

OMG! Yams, I go to GCC too? What year are you? What's your major?

Yeah, I applied to Cornell, Northwestern, and UChicago. My counselor was very friendly and was even excited about my plans, but she really had nothing to say or help me with (even though she tried by giving me vague, general advice). I just researched everything on my own. I was at a Northern CA CC, btw. I'm going to Northwestern this fall.

They simply aren't experienced with elite private application processes. Don't be mad at them for it... that's just the way it is. The fact is, you're gonna have to do almost all your own research and investigation if you want to apply to selective private schools. Especially make sure to read good books on writing the application essays... because you are going to get horrible advice on how to write a good application essay at many CCC's.

Thanks everyone for all the advice and insight. By the way, I want to transfer to New York University or Barnard College in New York City and CC Counselors, althought for the most part friendly and nice, have no clue about applying for admissions. I talked to a counselors and she was like," Just follow the UC IGETC, that will transfer into any private school." This is horrible advice, all private schools are different and they require different things from you. Luckily, Im doing my own research which is talking alot of my time but I know it will be worth it in the end and to whoever said my counselor is an *******, your right=]

Socalgal: I am just done with my first year of GCC, I'm taking summer classes. I was going for a bio major but now I switched to international studies, well the one they have at UCLA is call Global studies, I'm applying this year to the UC's, what about you? What year are you in and what's your major?? Nice to see another fellow GCC student here! (which is absolutelu rare)

I’m a GCC student too! hahaha

This thread is super old, but it is still valid. I hate that when I walk into the counseling center, they automatically assume that I’m transferring to a UC or CSU. It’s like thank you for explaining IGETC to me, but uh who said I was applying to a UC?
