To chance, or not to chance? Chance (me).

Was actually going to ED to Dartmouth, but ended up (uselessly/idiotically) doing SCEA to Princeton instead. Anyway, here's the meat:

Stats:
SAT I (breakdown): 740CR, 740M, 790W (superscore)

SAT II: 800 US History, 800 Math II, 760 World History

Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.84

Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): No ranks or deciles of any sort

AP (place score in parenthesis): US History (5), English Lang. (5), US Gov’t (5), Macroeconomics (5), World History* (4), European History* (5), Psychology* (4), Comparative Gov’t* (5) (*self-studied APs)

Senior Year Course Load: AP Physics B, AP Environmental, AP Calculus AB, AP English Lit., AP Latin, AP Human Geography, Photography Skills, Gym/Health

Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National AP Scholar, Commended PSAT Scholar, silver medal for National Latin Exam, cum laude certificate for National Latin Exam, and honorable mention for an essay contest hosted by an organization with whom I volunteer

Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Human Service Club (Vice President), Latin Honor Society (Vice President), Academic Team (Captain), 3 years of JV Bowling, FBLA (Treasurer; cancelled this year), NHS (economics/history tutor), school committee to improve school performance

Job/Work Experience: Tutor at Kumon (3 years)

Volunteer/Community service: Hindu rights group volunteer, Hindu Youth Group (in-charge of meals), head teacher for afterschool program chess class

Summer Activities: JSA Princeton (summer after 9th), Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Seminar NJ (10th), Boy’s State (11th), Ivy Scholars at Yale (11th), internship at a prestigious political/business/economics publication on par with Time/Forbes (had a small article published in the print version) (11th)

Essays: CommonApp was memorable, albeit somewhat facetious; Peer Rec was good and interesting (i.e. not 'my best friend is smart, nice, funny', more personal/revealing)

Teacher Recommendation: From my AP Gov teacher (should be good and I don't think he did any recycling of any sort on it), AP Lang. teacher (she's known to write good LoRs although recycles good chunks of it)

Counselor Rec: Good? I mean, don't think it matters much

Additional Rec: my boss from my internship (likely very strong)

Other
State (if domestic applicant): New Jersey (rude drivers, pollution, and doesn't help chances... nice state, eh?)
Country (if international applicant): 'Merica
School Type: Run-of-the-mill public
Ethnicity: Asian - Indian
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: $120k+
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Beautiful hair?

the beautiful hair is bound to get you in ;)

^Too kind! =D

Also should add I applied as an Economics/History major

Bro I understand your anxiety and nervousness, I think we all are.
But chance threads are not trust-worthy and plus you already submitted your application and can’t do anything about it.
I think it’s just the best to forget about it and relax.
Best of luck to us both!

In short, you applied to the right school with those stats!!

Leave the rest to the adcoms to decide!!
I am sure you will get accepted to atl east one of the schools you would’ve applied to.

As Iboss says - relax and talk about other things!! Join in on the discussion on frats on the RD page - if you like!!
Try doing stuff that will take your mind off decisions!! :)

All the best to everyone!!!

Unsurprising from the guy in the Buddhist bastion of Thailand!
(Not sarcasm or some racial/ethnic slur there - just happened to have argued in favor of Buddhist beliefs against Aristotle in a paper^)

Thanks for the somewhat vague prognosis. (I’m sorry, but SAT Writing, grammar-Nazi me has to call you out on that ‘would’ve’ there… c’mon man…). Hopefully I get into at least “one” school haha (which I already did: my safety, Rutgers).

^ Ahh, sorry. I don’t pay much attention to grammar, unless it is the SAT or my English language exam!! :p

And I meant that you will get into one of the top schools(as can be seen from your chances thread on almost every Ivy page!!). Rutgers is not what I meant!! :)

^ Yeah haha, was just pulling your leg. Although, in fairness to myself, I should point out I only did chance mes to two Ivies and a few lower Ivies; not “almost every Ivy”. Cut me some slack here, brother.

haha I guess the Thai-Buddhist culture changed me more than I thought

Duke, Vanderbilt, and WUSTL are not “lower Ivies.” They are excellent schools that are not Ivies at all.

Before you start calling out other posters on fine points of grammar, consider the wisdom or lack thereof of using “whom” to apply to an organization, not an individual. :)

Your chances would appear to be the same as those of any reasonably qualified candidate. I think that you would have been better off spending your time doing something more interesting that self-studying APs–and not only from an admissions perspective–but that’s water under the bridge. Your best chance of getting into D or any other highly competitive school probably rests on your internship. You were wise to get a rec from your boss there.

The fact that you were deferred from Princeton, rather than denied, probably speaks well for the overall strength of your application.

Good luck.

Didn’t mean to demean them or anything; was just using the standard terminology.

Well the self-studying AP thing served two purposes. One, I come from a not very renowned school. When I self-studied those APs (sophomore year, back when the opportunity cost wasn’t as high), my intent was to try and academically distinguish myself above my peers. Considering a couple of my LoRs laud me well for doing something no one in my school ever has before, I think it’s served its purpose of making me a standout well. The other purpose was just the fact that self-studying 4 APs, 3 of which (well, even psych has to do with behavioral economics) having to do with my general social studies strength, would indeed look impressive, especially having done 4 as a mere sophomore.

Your point about the internship was actually what led me to start a chance me thread. I feel like my app wouldn’t cut it had it not been for the obvious outlier effect of that one internship. I guess it goes along with my general economics/political theme (IvyScholars, my courseload, ‘political focus’ of my religion, along with specific achievements in some of my ECs that I haven’t listed here). But I mean, balanced or imbalanced app, if the shoe fits, wear it.
