To check, or not to check?

So I am going to apply to several UC's in November and I have been talking about it with my parents. The issue came up was if I should put my race (white) or leave it blank. I have heard leaving it blank somewhat penalizes you. But if not, it may be beneficial. I know the UC's aren't legally allowed to decide because of race, but let's face it, they SO do.

From experience, I have a couple of white & asian friends, who put their race down, had 4.0+ GPA and 2000+ sat/30+ act, and got denied from like UCD, etc. My hispanic friend got into it with a 1600 and a 3.7..
