So here's my situation: I'm starting my second year at ucla this fall, and I am definitely not dorming as I did my first year for financial reasons. My tuition first year was covered partly by a scholarship recognition award which I won't receive my second year, and the rest through loans. My parents paid for housing last year, around $3,450 a quarter. So this year, in efforts to save money, my parents suggested I commute (from Glendale, 22ish miles away), and we cut down on loans so they can contribute what they could towards tuition instead. However, I also have the option of staying in an apartment near campus for about $600 a month. Is it worth it? Is the commute really that bad?? I'm leaning towards commuting, but would it jeopardize my studies? I know I would definitely sacrifice involvement on campus and just enjoying college for a year, but is it worth it? Any advice would help, thank you!!!

Add up transportation costs and compare them. That would be the best way. Imo, i would rather be nearer to the campus.

i would try to live at least away form home. part of the experience

that would be 44 miles of driving every day. depending on traffic, with high gas costs…yea do the math

You might want to join a waitlist for a vanpool that travels from Glendale to UCLA: Zimride

You live in the LA area, you know how bad traffic is. Have you consider the cost of gas vis-a-vis the cost of housing?
