Is there anything you wish you would of known or done before you entered your freshmen year at Georgia Tech? Any suprises during the first year or anything you should of looked at before you went to a certain class for the first time? I'm sure many will appreciate any comments, I know I will!

Not an undergrad, but I wish I would have known how badly Tech price gouges their students that live on-campus.

Make sure to get involved with study groups for your harder classes as often as possible. I was always kind of a loaner about studying and didn’t start studying in groups until my Junior year. I had better grades with less work as a result.

No matter how smart you think you are, and no matter how great you were in high school, keep in mind that every student at Tech is just as smart and was just as great in high school.

The biggest issue I see with students is that they overestimate themselves. They skated by in high school, and probably never studied and still earned straight “A’s”. Once they get to Tech, they keep the same attitude and bomb their first semester (or two) before they realize that they need to get it together, study, and work hard.

It doesn’t hurt to underestimate yourself, work really hard, and earn good grades. Then, as you grow accustomed to the environment, cut back on the studying if you’re doing well.

And another thing - get involved in internships and co-op as soon as you get to Tech - seriously, start interviewing in September (your first month there!) Almost all summer interns are hired in September, even Freshman with no GPA.

^^cool didnt know that(about the freshman no gpa thing)

Freshmen get GPA’s (unlike MIT where there are no freshman GPAs). It’s just that you start in the Fall, you won’t get a GPA until December. I just wanted to make sure that was clear.

If you’re interviewing without a GPA, companies look at your high school statics.

@ G.P.: I really want to do the co-op program, and at Connect with Tech they suggest you start your sophmore year, while some start their freshmen year. When do you suggest someonoe interested in the program start?

The absolute latest to start is the first semester in your second year (so Fall of your sophomore year). However, if you want to work during the summer semester, join in Fall of your freshman year and apply for Summer of your freshman year.

I strongly agree with this. Understanding my strengths and limitations and keeping my ego in check has helped me maintain a 4.0 after two years. (Management may be an easier major, but if you slack off on the reading, don’t expect As on the tests.)

I wish I would’ve known how much more difficult Tech was than hs, and studied appropriately to get better grades. Seriously, you have to study a lot…start by following the professors recommendation of 15 hours a week or w/e they tell you.
