I have asked this of a couple of other threads and would be curious as to the answers regarding Duke:

Is the marching band no cut

Is the campus diverese and inclusive...and do black students seem to be welcoming and accepting to one another?

Is the feel of the school in general welcoming or elitist?

Thanks!

I have no idea, sorry.

The campus is EXTREMELY diverse. I’ve met people from Turkey, China, Italy, Brazil, Bangladesh… you name it. People of similar nationalities do congregate together, but this is to be expected; however, most people intermingle regardless of race. All the black students I’ve met are welcoming, but this has been the norm across the board.

Prior to arriving I expected the elitism to be more prevalent. Oddly, I have not noticed elitism whatsoever. Trying to get an ego fix with an elitist comment will only backfire; so many students here are impressive. Collectively, perhaps we do think ourselves pretty awesome for going to Duke. It is a great school, after all.

I’m a freshman by the way, so my comments mainly draw from first impressions.

Not a student, but a parent of a sophomore Marching Band member. It is no cut. If you play an instrument, you’re in. If you also have marching experience, you are ahead of the curve. Every year there are new members with no marching experience. You’ll be fine. It’s a great group.

Second london gentleman as well. All the people I’ve met have been incredibly down to earth.
