to current students- double major?

is it possible to double major at uchicago?

one hard science(physics) and one humanities(philosophy)

i know trying to do such a double major is hard at any school. then add to that the core and the rigor of uchicago...

i understand that it would be hard etc etc you advise against it etc etc- but would scheduling and major requirements allow it?

I was looking at the possibility of a BS in Physica and a BA in Chem (less requirements than the BS) and it seemed easy but I dont know that chem interests me that much.

Yes, it's possible. I contacted U Chicago about double majoring in biology and English. I received this response. I hope it helps.

Be aware that having such disparate majors would be difficult. However, this would not be impossible, and it is entirely possible. Many students use electives to create second majors and one (or more) minors. Upon entering the University of Chicago, students are assigned advisers that help with class scheduling, in addition to faculty advisers in the student's chosen area(s) of study. In short, a double major in English and biology would be difficult but not impossible.

ah thats good to hear.

thanks for the reply

hopefully ill be able to attend U of C.

I can answer this question pretty directly. I currently go to Chicago and I am on a track to major in physics, but I'd also like to double major in philosophy AND study abroad my third year. To see if this was possible, I planned out my courseload for the next 4 years. I only took three classes my first quarter (the min) and I took 4 (the max) my second quarter, though one was an elective. With this in mind, to double major and study abroad, I would have to take 4 classes every quarter for the rest of my stay at Chicago. This would give me, in the end, two more electives (out of almost 45 classes!) and I would have those my third quarter senior year. (Also keep in mind I planned for an honors physics track.) So, yes, it's possible, though, as you can see, very rigorous. But the way I see it, if I would just take philosophy courses for my electives anyway, it's worth it. I'm just going to see how it goes, and play it by ear. Hope this helps.

ouch

so few electives is a turn off. regardless of how much i enjoy both subjects id still like to dabble in other subjects. im sure its similar at most U's though. good thing i still have a little bit to think this over.

and thank you for the post prc618- that information will really help me as i think over what id like to do in college.
