When UM says, "While this is not the answer that you were hoping to hear, it is still good news. Your application is one of a group that remains under consideration," do they mean it? It makes me feel like I've still got a shot but people are saying that a deferral is a deferral nonetheless and all are treated equally in the RD round. Help!

I have heard that there is no difference. (I didn’t get this letter, but not the one basically demanding your senior year grades) I don’t know that for sure.

i think it would be helpful if there are any current students who were initially deferred and later accepted.
Like what the did, when did they hear back, did they have to send grades. etc…

Be honest - how much does it help to send in current grades? What if a B- managed to accidently slip in there, but there’s legitimate reasoning behind it? Guraaaagh, I’m freaking out. ;~;

If Michigan really wanted you, one B- won’t matter.

How can we tell Michigan really wants us? Is there something they’re looking for that we’re lacking?

If they really want you, you’ll get an acceptance letter in a few weeks/months.

^ lol, doesn’t really get any more direct or true

Honestly, you guys need to calm down (and this is coming from someone who was deferred himself, and views Michigan as a top choice). Fretting over e-mail content, stats of those accepted, and the like will not do anything for us now. Most of us either just finished finals, are about to, or have them in a month or so. The best thing we can do is work hard on those, make sure Michigan gets the grades, maybe send an e-mail to our admissions person (IF IT’S NEEDED), and stop worrying about it.

My daughter received the same kind of letter below (deferred EA) last year and accepted in March of this year. Hope this helps

After multiple individualized and comprehensive evaluations of your application to the University of Michigan College of XXXXXXX for Fall 2010, we believe that you have something uniquely valuable to contribute to our campus. However, our high application volume, coupled with the very strong credentials of our applicants in recent years, has contributed to an increasingly competitive admissions process. As a result, your application has been deferred for a final decision until a later date.

Your application will be re-evaluated, and a final decision will be made based on how your credentials and academic achievements contribute to the composition and quality of this year’s freshman applicant pool. All final admissions decisions of admit, deny, or waitlist will be made no later than mid-April, 2010.

Please refer to the website Office of Undergraduate Admissions: FAQs about the Admissions Process for Deferred Students for FAQ’s about the admission process and what to do next. Strong fall semester or second trimester grades may enhance your status in the deferred pool of applicants. Therefore, please ask your high school counselor to forward your fall semester or second trimester grades when they become available.

Be sure your U-M ID XXXXXXXX is on all materials submitted to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

We hope your interest in Michigan continues, and you have our best wishes for an enjoyable and successful senior year.

I was also initially deferred and then accepted in April, don’t worry this is by no means a rejection or anything close to that. Most people I know got in AFTER being deferred, not before.

Kyle is right. Don’t be discouraged by the deferal, be determined (Umich is worth the effort and the wait). Send in your 7th semester grades whether you are asked to or not, send in another recommendation. Don’t bug the crap out admissions, just show continued interest and hopefully you’ve done well 7th semester. A great share of the each class was originally deferred.

So no difference among the three letters?

Here is what was received. Is there hope still with a 3.56 GPA, 3 AP classes with a score of 5 on all three (got AP scholar award), ACT 34, SAT 2200 and currently taking 4 AP classes and one honors class? Letter is not signed by any one specific, is that bad?

"Thank you for your freshman application to the University of Michigan. After an initial individualized and comprehensive review of your application, we have determined that we will need additional information in order to make a final decision. We will not re-evaluate your application file until after our regular decision deadline of February 1, 2013. We need this additional information and time to ensure that we give your application the best possible review. We will notify you of a final decision on your application by mid-April.

The quality of grades earned in academic courses is one of several critical factors taken into consideration in evaluating a student’s competitive admissibility. To give your application a final evaluation, we will need your fall semester or first trimester grades. Because it is important that we receive these grades as soon as possible, please request to have a PDF of your grades sent from the issuing institution to our office via an e-transcript vendor or to ecredentials@umich.edu. If your counselor sent the initial School Report for your application through The Common Application online portal, they will need to complete the 2012-2013 MidYear Report using the same method. Otherwise, please ask your high school counselor to fax a report of these grades to our office at 734-936-0740.

We appreciate your interest in the University of Michigan and look forward to receiving the information requested. If you have specific follow-up questions, please visit http://umich.custhelp.com or phone 734-764-7433.
^Just so you know, I do recall that some people get in after responding to that letter, so hang in there, do what they tell you, and rock your senior year ;)

@Sapharodon

I got a B- on my transcript but still got accepted EA. I improved in later years in that subject, so I think that def helped.

I meant that I managed to get a B- in my Senior year - everything else was great! But I was forced to miss a year of German, and jumping into Advanced German after a year off was… ergh…

I’m just scared. I KNOW I’ve had this precious “upward trend,” a very noticible one. I just hope I won’t ruin my chances by sending in First Trimester grades with a B- in it. :(
