To Deferees...

When are you sending in the optional update form and what are you putting on it? Are you sending more with it anyway, putting something on the back, answering just the questions it asks, or not sending it at all? I'm getting back into the nervous about Stanford mood!!!

Aren't there any deferees on here anymore???

I'm sending in the update form towards the end of February...I'm waiting to hear whether or not I'm a Natl Merit Finalist (I'm somewhat sure that I am one, since the website stats say 15/16 Semifinalists become Finalists), so I wanna add that on there. I'm not sending anything more...just this update form.

I'll be sending the Update Form, probably some time in mid-February. I too will have the National Merit Finalist to mention if I become one. I also am going to talk about some new honors I have received from November till now, and new activites that I have joined.

I'm still around this board, don't worry! Stanford is still definitely one of my top choices too.

Does Stanford defer a majority of its SCEA applicants, or do they reject more applicants?

I'm pretty sure Stanford defers about 30% and rejects about 50%.

This was this year's data, approximated:

accepted: 900 ----- 20.9 %
defered: 1,164 ----- 27.1 %
rejected: 2236 ----- 52.0 %

Total: 4300 --------- 100.0 %

As you can see, they reject WAY more than say, oh....Harvard. Harvard accepted about 20% and deferred 75% and rejected the remaining 5%. Of course, given Harvard's insane applicant pool this year (22,700!!!) it's gonna be ridiculously tough. But hey lucky us, we applied Stanford SCEA!

Yeah, I'm gonna send in the form once I hear whether I'm a National Merit Finalist. Mostly I'll just be talking about a community service project I organized back in december for new activities (it's mentioned on my app as something I was going to do, but now I've done it, and it was awesome)...maybe my nerdy obsession with social security reform, haha :) And I'll make what I love about Stanford really explicit. But that's about all I can do....ohhhh well.

Do y'all think it's really worth it to wait to see if you're named a National Merit Finalist? It doesn't sound like it's much of a distinction, plus if you're a semifinalist with good grades and good SAT scores they'll probably just assume you'll be named one. I always assumed it was better to get the forms in a little sooner so they have more time to look yours over as compared to all the ones sent just before the deadline, but I really don't know much about adcoms.

It is true that about 90% of semifinalists become finalists, but as long as you meet the deadlines, I don't think being early will have a significant influence.

Zeller: It's not a big distinction, true, but it's still a distinction, and a nationally recognized one at that. Plus you get MONAYYY WOOOOOOO

turtle is right; getting it in sooner won't matter as long as you meet the deadline. Getting it in late....now that's a problem.

Yeah I plan on sending the form a week or so before the deadline to avoid what Zeller is talking about.

Bother, another thing to wait for. I'm sick of waiting. Frankly I think the college admission process teachs more about the realities of life than college ever could (lots of people are SOL and it takes forever).

Hey flipchick, I don't know yet - I was deferred too. I've been too busy keeping up with things, while totally disheartened over the deferral. Life goes on, and Stanford may not be the right school for me (as long as they don't appreciate my accomplishments). Just one of those life's lessons I guess, where you come out as a whole person in the process of accepting rejection. Hey, there are good schools waiting to accept us Stanford deferees. Good luck! :)

yep, i was deferred too . . .grr . . . but just sent my optional update form last monday, included nat'l merit finalist, new stuff I've been doing, why I really want to be at Stanford, etc. but don't know if I will get in. I hate waiting.

i think you all should keep your hopes up...there's a reason stanford deferred you when they could easily have tossed your app in the rejected pile. if you have the time it could only help--thats why they send it out to us deferred kids.
any ideas as to how much they want for each question? i'm typing mine on a separate sheet, so i have no idea how long to make my responses.
on another note, i live in ma and i'm not going to be able to send mine til monday. does it look silly/over-achiever-ish to send these forms priority mail or whatever? thanks!

i dont think it matters, actually...dont non-adcom types in the office sort the documents into your file?

Question:
I know that approx 27% were deferred, but what percent of Stanford deferees are actually admitted under Regular? Any answers would be helpful, thanks.

last year was the first year of scea, and the letter stated that about 10% of deferees were accepted. statistically, thats not very useful since...well...if this year's deferee pool is much stronger, the %age could go way up. conversely, if we're all pretty bad in comparison, it could be very very low...

:-/

10%'s not much, maybe I should just get myself in the rejected mindset to avoid devastation
