TO DO LIST for incoming freshmen

Hi, I just decided to attend GWU.

I am kinda doing this all on my own and I have no one to help me figure out what needs done. I don't know where to start after sending in my letter to the admissions office saying I am accepting admissions.

So for those of you who started off as freshmen, can you inform as what steps need to be taken to finish enrollment?

Things I need to know: Paying deposit, paying bills/tuition, the colonial inauguration, et cetera...

So if you can give me an idea of what needs done, that'd be great; thank you so much for any help offered.

congrats on picking gw!! i’m in the process of doing exactly what you are so hopefully i can help.

keep your gwid handy!! it’s the six digit number starting with G they assigned you.

1) send in a check for $800 with your acceptance of admission letter. put it in the envelope and take it to the post office, i think they can insure it or something to make sure your check isn’t lost or stolen.

2) go here: [Welcome Class of 2014 - gwired.gwu.edu/freshmen](http://gwired.gwu.edu/freshmen/EnrollingStudents/) this is your to-do list!

also, don’t worry if your housing application won’t let you sign in at first. check to make sure the email account works (i think there’s a link to email at gwired.gwu.edu) and as long as it does, you’re fine. it takes the school a while to get your deposit and clear you to apply for housing.

I got on CC to ask the same question as remyluvsrogue. Thank you for the link blueskidoo. I’m working on ranking my dorms asap.

As per blueskidoo - that website says it all! 1st follow all the steps for “accepted” students. Then follow the steps for “enrolling” students. The key to really get hings rolling is the deposit. Once they receive that you can create your NetID and setup your GWeb and e-mail accounts. Then everyting else falls into line, CI registration, Course Registration, Housing prioritization, etc.

You should already be able to view your FA Award from their previous e-mail and instructions.

Follow above website - it is very thorough and good.

CJ

You said that it takes the school a while to get your deposit and clear you for housing.

I mailed my check on 4/10 and still haven’t heard anything.
How do you know if they received the check? Do they email you a confirmation?
Is there somewhere to check on the website?

I would like to receive some kind of confirmation that they received my deposit before the April 1 deadline. What do you think?

Honestly, so far I think the only confirmation that they have actually received your deposit is if you can sign into the housing portal. I sent my check in on the 17th and it wouldn’t let me sign in for the first few days (it worked on the 22nd), but I assume that when they received my deposit they cleared me to submit the housing application. I’m sure you can call and see if your deposit has been received (I’m not sure what department…maybe financial aid?). Also, I think we’re supposed to receive another packet in the mail, but I haven’t gotten it yet.

p.s. Make gwired.gwu.edu your best friend! I can already tell that it has important news and links, and it’s definitely helped me out a ton so far.

collegedecision - nothing “formal” here either from GWU after deposit sent. However, we checked about a week after we sent our letter of enrollment and $800 deposit and my “S” was able to create his e-mail account and NETID using his GWID as per the website intructions (under “enrolled” students). It took the system about 24 hrs. after creating the above for him to be able sign in and register for CI, course registration, and Housing.

Remember, there is no urgency for housing registration - deadline May14th. They begin assignments May 15th with ED1/ED2/RD priorities.

However, the spaces for CI and class registration are being reserved now.

Give it a try - worse case is it won’t let you - then it’s time for a call to admissions.

CJ

Yup … you were right …
I was able to get into the housing portal now.
So I guess that means that they received our enrollment deposit?
But our check didn’t clear yet. Did anyone’s check clear?

Just would like to receive some kind of confirmation or proof that I am enrolled before the May 1 deadline …

collegedecision - our check has not cleared either. However, if you can register for CI, course registration date, and housing I think we’re OK since these actions are for “enrolled” students only.

I suspect we’ll see a packet/something in writing from GW or the cancelled check after the May 1st deadline for all students.

CJ

I do remember reading (somewhere - sorry to not be specific, but I’ve read SO MUCH gwu stuff lately!) that the cancelled check serves as rcpt… I think that was in the student accounts area… so that may also hold true for admissions deposits.

edit: http://colonialcentral.gwu.edu/billing/paying/

A check will take 3 or 4 weeks to clear. That is my experience and my sibling’s. Not sure what their logic is, but it takes that much. I hope that changed since 2008

Wow, this got rather long; much faster than I expected. Thanks everyone for your answers!
