I live in Chapel Hill. If you're coming from Texas, you can bet you will need warmer clothes before Christmas. It's variable - sometimes we have the doors and windows open on Christmas Day, but a couple of years ago we had the ice storm from he** at the beginning of December. Trees down, power out for days and highs in the 30s. You just never know here. There are tons of places to shop, both mega stores and otherwise. Also, the campus is pretty compact within the town - roads are narrow and parking is scarce. It's a great place, though, I know you'll love it!

Yep, NC is warm compared to MD.

BTW: I'm female. I know the name doesn't suggest it, but this is the one I more or less wanted (actually I wanted frostburgchick2010, but it was too long). No offense taken though, it's not the first time it's happened :).

Wow! Thanks for the HUGE amount of replies!
I already know my roomate - I met her during a scholarship interview and we decided to room together. She lives two hours from UNC.
I am thinking that the whole rented van/car thing would be a good idea. At the very least, it should be FUN!
Initially, we thought about taking our car - but my mom is studying in a local college herself and she can't come with us because our schedueles don't coincide. Neither I nor my dad want to drive by ourselves. I am going to a service learning thing two days before, so I am hoping that move in day wont be very crazy.
But I do realize that I will need to stop buying clothes now and try to learn to live with less stuff. It will make things a lot easier/cheaper.
Thanks for all the great advice!

If your roommate is only two hours away from school, work out an agreement to let her bring all the bulky stuff for the room. Concentrate on keeping your things to a minimum, i.e., you don't need more than 3 weeks' worth of clothing.

While the initial trip with dad sounds like a good bonding experience, the need to move your stuff will continue through the next four years. You'll be much better off if you keep it light.

Agree with midwesterner. My d. was only 3 hours away in SW VA--her roommate was from Alaska. So my daughter furnished all the bulky items--worked out fine.
