Sorry if the title was misleading. But I need some people to answer my somewhat-stupid questions. So please understand... don't get mad at me D:

So... my SAT Reasoning's below 2200.

My GPA isn't too fabulous (93-ish).

ECs? Yearbook head of photography, newspaper editor, jazz band for 3 years - nothing super special.

And I'm Asian, too: Korean-Canadian (HAH not even Korean-American).

But I have a clear goal of what I want to do (yes, change the world!), and what I would love to do for my life (nope, not math, not science, never wanted to be a doctor, lawyer, rocket scientist, accountant, whatever sounds like a job that Asian parents expect their children to have): I want to write and write and write and write, be a columnist who will keep on writing even if there's only one person on earth reading my articles.

As crazy as it might sound... should I bother applying since I have nothing (other than application fee) to lose?

Or should I not even bother 'cause it's obvious that I'm going to receive a rejection letter that will only disappoint me?

Thank you for reading - and possibly writing a reply ;)

Stanford definately prides itself on its almost indifference toward one’s test scores. Though, it is still BRUTAL in admissions. To get a feel for them, I’d suggest that you look at a Class of 2013 Results Thread.

Just because you might be below the “average SAT / GPA” levels, don’t let that discourage you! Remember, those are averages, it means that HALF of the admitted students were below those values!

I’ve heard from the admissions officer that Stanford accepts four groups of people in similar quantities: the little-miss-perfects who have perfect everything and are the stars/captains of everything, the prodigies who are national stars in something or other, the people who just jump out of the page at them for one reason or another, and then the average joes who just seem like good people who will fit in and make the campus interesting. So even if you aren’t a child prodigy or little-miss-perfect, you can still qualify for two of the four groups. I would say definitely don’t give up, and pour your heart and soul into your essays, which is where you will really stand out. Make sure to try to make yourself look as unique as possible – make sure that NOBODY other than you could send in the same application!

Anyways, hope that helps, and you should definitely apply!

You have to remember though, that most people who are below the average value in something arent below for other things. so it would be unusual to find someone who had a less than average SAT and a less than average GPA

Thank you guys all It really did encourage me - I’ll try my best for the rest of my high school time and write a killer essay that shows my passion ;)

My dad went to h.s. school with a guy who got an F in art class. However, he went on to be a cartoonist and even had his own syndicated cartoon strip. And he made some money. He just had his OWN style, which didn’t fit in with what the teacher wanted. Perhaps you have an excellent way of conveying your thoughts down on paper, but might not look as good on a test.

I really enjoyed reading this from you:

Your post:

A question that just emerged:

I love writing, and I think writing is my forte, but my SAT reasoning writing score isn’t great. Would that be seen as an oddity?

@ 2Leashes: I’m happy that you enjoyed reading a piece of my writing - if it counts as one. (See, this is the joy of writing - there’s someone who enjoys reading it!)

It was my pleasure, mmmaythe! I enjoy creative writing. I almost wish I was applying to colleges, myself! I would love to put together an essay or two. Go for your dream! I’m sure there will be plenty more out there who will like reading what you have to write!

Stanford was lying when they said they read every essay. That’s some ********. I worked at the admission office. My job was to screen out the apps that didn’t meet the criteria. I can’t tell you what they are cuz I already signed a form. After 1 week, from 25,000 apps, it goes down to about 5000 then they read the essays.

asian75 STOP ■■■■■■■■!!! Someone should put an IP ban on that user they are spreading LIES and making applicants like myself feel depressed and pessimistic!!!

mmaythe don’t worry!!! I barely passed 2200 and I still applied even though everyone on CC has a really high high high score. Most people I know who got accepted are the average joes someone was talking about with about 2000+ SATs. You are done with your app like I am so don’t fret about it. Just enjoy the rest of your senior year and start panicking on April 1st. I’m sure you will get good results even if Stanford is not the right one!!

Asian is someone who usually talks trash about Stanford and gives misleading information about Stanford. I don’t know if that falls under the definition of ■■■■■. I highly doubt he worked at Stanford Admissions office for a number of reasons.
