How many can you miss in each section?

It varies. Generally it's from 3 - 8. On the sample test available at the ACT website, you can miss 8 on the English, 10 on the Math (which seems unusually high; I wouldn't expect it to be so many when you take the real thing), 7 on the Reading, and 3 on the Science to get a 30 on each of those sections individually.

My heart sank as i read that.

the real act guide says you need 35 right (five wrong) to get a 30 --
not too much better, but a little bit more wiggle room lol

that science curve seems unusually harsh - i really dont think its actually like that.

Ohh but it is. ALL official ACT practice tests contain at least one two-point jumps somewhere 30+ (that is, miss one and go down 2 points; for example, miss 1, get 35; miss 2, get 33). So I'd say you can miss 5 TOPS for a 30 on science. But keep in mind, getting even 30, 30, 30, 28 will give you a 30 composite. Stronger areas can compensate for weaker ones.

on the oct test, i scored a 32 on science and i completely flat our guessed on 8 of them, so yea...

On June Act, 4 wrong in science was a 32
