to haas or not to haas?

should i do an applied math or a business degree? yes i applied to haas and after this semester i'll have finished prereqs for both majors.

i feel like the majority of jobs that applied math majors and business majors are pretty much the same, some sort of consulting or finance. business may be more flexible on the small business side and math more flexible on the data analysis/research side.

i'm good at math, but it doesnt mean i enjoy it. i didnt really like ugba10, but i did pretty well.

haas decisions come out in a few days but drop deadline is right after, so i want to have a set plan by then.

any good advice receives a cookie!

I don’t think you should be a math major if you don’t enjoy it. Most non-quant jobs in consulting or finance only require basic math.

What courses did you like?

^theater 10, astro c10
i’m talking about relative liking, i didnt despise those classes, just preferred others alot more

lol . . . I thought this thread was going to be about the relative merits of avocados . . .

I’m sort of in your same dilemma. I applied to Haas too and am doing math or stats for back up, except that I’m a bit behind on pre-reqs. The one thing I’m worried about is that I might have an easier time getting a high GPA in business than in math, which is important for that first job.

back up as in ur not doing it if u get into haas? or are you trying to decide between the two

employers look at GPA relevant to major, thats why engineers are successful in getting banking jobs even with a lower gpa

Well, both. I’m still deciding between Haas or math/stats even if I do get in because I really didn’t enjoy my pre-req classes even though I did well in them. And if I don’t get into Haas then it will have to be my back up anyways.

Are you sure GPA is relevant to major? I’ve been hearing the opposite and I haven’t heard of engineers with low gpa getting banking offers. I think maybe if the gpa wasn’t that far then they should be competitive (i.e. engineer 3.7 vs business 3.8), but I don’t think a 3.5 gpa will have much of a chance even if they are engineering.

Some applications ask for a Major GPA but I think that is only to see if it’s way lower than your total GPA. I think most firms will still focus on total GPA. There isn’t even a way to verify your Major GPA as it’s not listed on your transcript. Maybe engineers get a break though.

1) UGBA 10 is not a good indication of a ‘typical’ upper business class.

2) The good thing about Haas is that it prepares you professionally, which is not present in any other major (correct me if I’m wrong). What I mean by this is that it is part of the program to learn how to network, how to write your resume, how to prepare for an interview, etc. The staff they have here are great too, and have plenty of experience in the field.

3) Have you considered doing a double major?

math is my back up for haas too, so this semester im taking 2 math (1 lower, 1 upper) and 2 biz (both upper divs) together (+ my R1B) to get a feel of what a an “average” double major’s semester would feel like for the next 4 semesters if i do make it to haas. and every day i stick around in math i can feel my overall gpa steadily decreasing…

if you are deciding BETWEEN math/stats or haas, maybe you should consider a double major. i think the double would be a useful pair.

if you are set on one or the other, maybe you should consider these things

 1. which do i like more (or in your case, which one is less boring)
 2. which one will i score a competitive gpa in by graduation
 3. which one is really geared for the future i want to work towards: yes a math or stats major can get a job a biz major can, but there’s a reason math and stats and biz are all DIFFERENT majors… you learn completely different things.

imo, look up the courses you’ll have to take for then next 2 years if you choose one or the other. look at a few syllabi & see if it’s really what you want to learn. see if there are classes you “really” want to take in either major (instead of a double major you could just do “related coursework”, idk).

i considered a double, but i’m doing a cs minor so there’s no room

im not too worried about gpa, becasue i dont see myself doing bb banking or bbm consulting

im already pretty much set on one side actually after talking to people from both departments, but im looking for reasons to change my mind

@crowslayer: how is doing 2 math + 2 ugba in a semester?

well im taking 5 units biz (196 and 107), 8 units math (53, 110). the biz courses i’m taking are pretty relaxed, so idk how representative that is (for all i know it could be, i mean 107 is just weekly small writing assignments + light weekly readings) and 196 is just once a week, so its like whatever.

but juggling 2 maths at once is kind of weird for me. in 53 i feel we go too slowly, in 110 i feel we go way too fast. im just really happy the biz courses are light in the hw department b/c i spend a lot of time reading/internalizing math concepts + doing the math hw (which can get ridiculous sometimes, just how long the proofs in 110 take and just the sheer volume of hw problems my prof dishes out in 53).

in the end, doing 2 math + 2 ugba isnt too bad. but in the upcoming semesters i will have to do 2 math + 3 biz (courses potentially not as lax as 107 and 196… actually probably certainly not as lax… lol, oh god, prof ross in 107…ffs)

i think i should take a summer session or two just to make life a little easier on me… but we’ll see after wednesday (this may not even be an issue for me by thursday… ><; crosses fingers)

yep… Wednesday/judgment day… let’s revisit the thread on the faithful day.

whos down to drink wed night?

How’d everyone do?

in. 10 char.

IN. I’m still shaking, haha!

I tripled checked just to make sure I didn’t read it incorrectly. (The first time I saw it, I stopped when it said “congratulations!”)
