To Ivy League Applicants, What are your safety schools?

My safety is Swarthmore, to which I was accepted

I’m in Oregon, my real safeties when I applied were the Claremont schools (minus Harvey Mudd), U of San Francisco and U of Oregon. But I got into U of Southern California pretty early so that’s my “safety.”
I’m in a bit of a different situation though, since I’m applying a year early. So ivy league schools that care less about high school diplomas are in some cases going to be more likely to admit me than a state school.

Tons, but I’d say my main safety schools were UTexas and A&M since I live here and get auto admissions. To a lesser extent, I guess BU was one…
I also had a reach-safety, if that makes sense. I applied to Dartmouth because I knew I’d get in, not because of arrogance but because I did Bound and was told that I was one of the stronger applicants to the program in a meeting with the regional adviser for Texas. I figured if I really didn’t do well in reach admissions, Dartmouth seemed like they’d take me. I’m just glad they sent me a likely. Made the wait much less hectic.

What do people think about Fordham (they give full tuition scholarships to National Merit Semifinalists) and U Delaware Honors Program (also lots of merit money to Honors program students) as safeties?

Applied to four Ivies, Colgate was my safety, accepted as in “Alumni Memorial Scholar” - one of their top 200 applicants.

For me UIUC, U Washington , UCSD were my safeties.

Applied to Ivies, but didn’t get in. Waitlisted at Columbia. Accepted at Carnegie Mellon and NYU Stern, plus 5 more.

Safeties:
Drexel - 1/2 tuition scholarship, maybe more if I tried to get a NMF scholarship
SUNY Stony Brook - full scholarship, $3000 presidential scholarship, WISE program
Northeastern - University Scholars Program, full scholarship
Bucknell (maybe a safety) - Presidential Fellowship (because of scientific research)

University of Washington was mine

It depends on what you want to major in. For Ivy quality applicants (4.0-plus wGPA, mostly AP honors classes, 2200 plus SAT, strong EC’s, writing and rec’s) in the math/sciences, I would suggest U Rochester, UPitt, and Michigan. For liberal arts, try Colgate, Trinity, and Wesleyan (borderline safety, maybe more of a match at these stats). Plus for either liberal arts or sciences the top public college in your state.

Be careful of top publics though, a lot out there cannot be considered absolute safeties (especially in CA, North Carolina, Virginia, Michigan etc.)

My safety was my local state school and USD. Remember, a true safety is both an institution where you’re absolutely sure you’ll get in and that you can for sure afford. You should also pick a safety that you’ll be happy at, because there’s a chance that you’ll end up there. :D

I’m a current Junior and planning to apply to Ivies next year. Since I’m from California, my safeties are some of the lower UCs (Santa Barbara, Davis) and Cal Poly SLO if worst comes to worst…though I highly doubt I’ll end up there. I’m also using NYU and Boston College as safeties/matches. I also feel I have a really strong chance of getting into USC (already gotten several letters offering scholarships and whatnot) so I guess I’m considering that a safety.

Be careful, UC’s are becoming more selective and Cal-Poly is only a safety ny major. It’s selectivity for engineering is incredible. Also… USC has an acceptance rate near to 20%, it should likely not be considered a safety unless you have near perfect stats and incredible EC’s.

To nygiants27, Davis got pretty hard this year, a lot of people in the top 5% got rejected, just something to think about. Although if you’re aiming for ivies I’m sure you’ll get in. Good luck by the way!

Thanks for your input! To PAGRok, I’ve basically already been offered admission to USC, which is why I can consider it a safety. And yeah I know how tough the UCs have been getting, but based on seeing my peers’ stats and acceptances/rejections this year, I think I’m in a position to use the lower ones as safeties.

^How have you been offered admission already? I’ve been getting scholarship stuff but I’m pretty sure those are just advertisements.

Mine were Wesleyan University, University of Michigan, and Boston College. That said, I may have overextended (although I did get into all of them). If I did it again, I might throw in one “super safety.” Maybe BUBoston University or George Washington University. Hope this helps!
