To Javis.

hey javis,
since you're alredy a hopkins student, these questions are for you. btw i applied ED

1, did you apply ED or RD.

2, what were your stats(complete), i need to see my chance.

3, did you apply for financial aid. if yes, how much of it was pure grant, and how much of it was loan.(i'm scared of ending up with a huge loan.)

4, if i want to do genetics, will i choose the biology major.

5, is middlebury more competitive or hopkins. i want to apply to middlebury incase i don't get into the latter cuz they are need-blind.

thanx man.

ED

I'm embarrassed by my stats, email me if you want to know. It's hard to say someone will get in just by looking at their numerical stats. I was a long shot for BME(when looking at my numerical stats).

I applied for finicial aid, but got only $2k. Apparently my parents don't need to borrow any money. If your family seriously needs the money you will get some form of grant over a loan. Hopkins does not give aid if your parents are not willing to pay, but only if they are unable to pay.

4.What do you mean by "do genetics"? Research genetics (biology) or engineer equipement(Mol Bio Chem E, or BME). I'm not 100% sure if those majors are correct. Genetics are pretty specific.

5.Middlebury is seemingly more competitive because it accepts half as many students as hopkins does, and it doesn't directly compete with elite universities. Don't get me wrong, Middlebury is a wonderful and very selective liberal arts college. But for sciences in general hopkins has them beat.

Middlebury's greatest overlaps are Dartmouth, Brown, Williams, Amherst, and Bowdoin. Hardly non-elite schools.

Javis, i have a couple questions if you have some time one of these days...could I by any chance contact you via a messaging service? I have aim if that works, but if you have something else im flexible! thanks

My bad about Middlebury. Bad judgement call on my part. You can't really say if JHU or Middlebury is more competitive. You can post your questions here, so that it will benefit everyone.

the only thing bothering me with my decision is the financial aid i've asked them. it is purely based on need and that shows in the papers. but have you even heard of jhu giving $35,000 to anyone? will i even recieve such a huge amount of aid. i think ishould stick to LAC's after my rejection arrives. frankly put, i've been really discouraged by ppl coming here applying ED with 1500's. good lord.

I know one person that gets $38,000 and another that gets $35,000 in financial aid.

this fact does not raise my hopes for these ppl might be stellar applicants for all i know.

javis, in a country like pakistan, we don't really have opportunities to takeup many extracurriculars. does the admission commity realize that while considering someone's deciison. it might even be so that some Ec's requiring much work may outweigh a large no. of EC's which are less tiresome.

Thats actually a good question, and to be honest I am not sure. Quality of and dedication to ECs are more important than quantity.

Oh and about my friends, they aren't the most stellar students and are close to the average student around here.

you know what, now that really abates my fear. i still have little hope though. lets see what happens. tell me one thing, what's the difference between a LAC and a uniersity. will my career be hurt if i want to major in genetics and i do it from a LAC

sorry to bug you so much javis. i wanted to know whether we're offered the flexibility to change our major subject close to the one we applied for. for example, i applied for biology and i realise after going there that the one i really wanted was bio molecular engineering. can that be arranged without much hassle. thanx a lot.

oh and one more thing thats bugging me is the certification of finances. apart from the bank stamp and signature on the stamp, i submitted a bank statement which shows influx of salary each month and all the transactions, as well as the current balance of the account. is there anything else to be submitted? how were we to prove the information on the financial aid information, the stuff about house/land values etc. because i didn't. they didn't tell me. help!

Hmm...I don't remember. My parents filled out that part of the application. The best thing to do is to contact someone from the financial aid department.
