I don't drink, smoke, or do drugs, for many reasons I won't list here. I'm not a crazy partier either, although I don't refuse them; I just think there are more fun things to do than parties. I also enjoy community service. I have hobbies and interests that make me a unique person, and I would like to maintain my individuality. Paying the due is not a huge problem, but I would like it to be as cheap as possible. As for houses I don't mind their qualities, but I want houses with clean, large bathrooms with toilets that flush well. I don't know if I want to live in a frat house or not, but I would like to have an option to choose.

Should I join a frat or not? If yes, which frats should I look out for at Penn?

There’s a community service frat at Penn… My sister is a part of it. I don’t know what it’s called. My sister doesn’t do any of those things (drugs, etc) too… so I was surprised when she told me she joined one. It is co-ed and you do community service projects like helping kids in China and stuff. They don’t have housing for that particular frat.

I’m in a fraternity at Penn, and one thing I can say with certainty is that you can find fraternities which do not ostracize non drinkers. With more than 30 fraternities on campus, there is something for everybody. Granted, you probably wouldn’t want to do some of the real broski fraternities if you aren’t a huge partier, but fraternities are, for the most part, about more than just parties. Mine emphasizes being well rounded… almost everybody is part of at least one other campus group, and we take pride in being diverse. The main reason I joined FIJI is that I would become friends with a group of guys I would otherwise never meet, and it has lived up to my expectations - and then some!

If you’re a freshman, I’d advise you to do spring rush… at least get some free food! If you find a fraternity that seems like a good fit, pursue it. If not, no big deal.
