Hello everyone! I was just wondering if any students at ucsd can give me advice on whether it is a good idea to join a sorority as a freshmen. my major is undeclared, but i plan on studying biology. although i am not much of a partyer, i still want to be a part of the social scene and make friends and meet new people. however, i dont want to become one of those sorority girls who always go to parties and drink @.@

bottom line is, is the social life really that bad? and about the triton eye..

Don’t believe the social life and triton eye myths. Just think about, why would one college be significantly “uglier” than another.

I would recommend rushing and seeing whether you like it or not. Also, if you do plan to join one, its going to be time consuming when you rush. Think of it as a class rather than just free time that quarter.

There are tons of threads about the social scene. I recommend you search through them to get a better idea of it. From my experience, I would say the parties generally tend to be smaller and consist of a dozen or so friends rather than hundreds of people.

Joining a sorority is a great way to form a network of friends and gain the opportunity to attend many social events. However, you have to keep in mind that if you join one, you will likely have an obligation to attend a certain amount of events each week. If you don’t want to join a sorority, you will be able to find a group of people to party with if that’s your personality. I say rush and see if you think it’s for you.

It’s definitely worth it to at least attend recruitment, even if you decide not to join a sorority you’ll meet lots of cool people in the process. But honestly joining my sorority was the best decision I made while at UCSD (well, it’s tied with studying abroad haha). PM me if you have any specific questions about recruitment!

It’s hard to tell if the social scene is dead or not when you’re involved in Greek Life at UCSD because there are always fun things to do! That does include parties, but also dances, philanthropy events, exchanges (a party with one sorority and one fraternity) and more! Those events are 90% optional but why wouldn’t you go if you have time for a few a week in between studying? It’s worth a shot. If you’re afraid of any kind of hazing, DO NOT BE. I have NEVER heard of, witnessed, or heard a rumor about ANY UCSD Panhellenic sorority hazing, forcing you to drink when you don’t want to, or anything like that. Because they are big national chapters with big national reputations, they seriously do not tolerate hazing. End of story.

@PNW If you’re thinking of joining a sorority, you should be more concerned with how you fit in with the members. All sororities have different types of social events with the different frats so if you’re concerned with not being able to interact with one of the frats, don’t be.
