Where would you rather go to school/live? Why?

Depends on:
- Major
- Classes offered on each campus
- Cost of living
- Connection to the campus (need to visit both)

The names says nothing between these two although some would say Berkeley is “better” - but it depends on the department, and your goals. If you stay at UCLA, and you would like to go to their Med school, I would say it would be easier since there are many volunteering and shadowing positions there versus Berkeley. But again,depends on the above factors.

I’m also curious about the question posed by @euph0ric!
Just because I am having an awful time trying to make that same choice.

I’m choosing Berkeley over UCLA for reasons that may seem odd to other users. I’m kind of tired of socal and wanted to experience the dark side…or norcal. UCLA felt too crowded for me and I think Berkeley’s Political Science program was better.

As far of living situations, I didn’t want to live in LA because it didn’t seem as exciting as living in a college town so near San Francisco. Also, I don’t want to bring my car and for the most part nobody walks in LA. Moreover though, I think that the opportunities at Cal stood out for me more and I couldn’t help but swoon over that prestige.

@ocnative interesting.
Well, I, personally, really like northern California, there is a lot of natural beauty up there!
Hope everything goes well for you at Cal.

@AnthroFlo

Thanks! I agree, there’s a lot of natural beauty up there. Have you decided yet?

@ocnative
Haha, not even close to making a decision
I have my days where I think “UCLA? Nope, it’s Cal for sure” and then other days where I think “No, no. It isn’t Cal, its UCLA!” I kind of just swing back and fourth. Eventually I’ll land on one for a long enough period of time that I will submit my SIR.

Though everyone is telling me to go to Cal (counselors, professors, parents, etc…) but UCLA has a lot of things I appreciate so I need to give it more thought.

I’ll be making a comprehensive pro and con list any day now.

I don’t know, @AnthroFlo.

As much as I am a fan of UCLA, you strike me as the kind of person who’d benefit more from going to Berkeley. I’ll have to join your parents, counselors, etc. in telling you to go to Berkeley.

And you KNOW you should go to Berkeley if I of all people tell you to pick that school over UCLA. :P

I appreciate your honest input @Cayton.
What makes you think I would benefit more from going to Berkeley?
Was it my urge to make a comprehensive pro and con list :p

UCLA and Los Angeles of course! IMO, UCLA has better housing, food, athletics, weather, and general atmosphere. At the UG level, you can’t go wrong with either. The vast majority of employers and grad schools aren’t going to care where you go! I’d suggest you simply go with your gut OP.

LA simply has more to do and seemed more exciting considering I’ve lived up north for a decade. Berkeley is a cool place to visit but idk about living there. The only people I know that really love it there are the artsy and “hipster” types.

@AnthroFlo

Well, a while back, you made that thread soliciting input from others about which UC to go to. Based on your stated preferences and what I believe your priorities are, you may benefit more from an education at Berkeley than UCLA.

Admittedly, UCLA doesn’t have an anthropology library as Berkeley does. And you seem to love learning about anthropology very much. Berkeley also has more libraries than UCLA. You seem to prioritize the things that Berkeley can offer more of to you than UCLA can. So, yeah.

Biased as I may be towards one of these schools, I am making this suggestion because I believe it would be helpful.

@Anthroflo, I’m shocked you haven’t decided on Berkeley yet!

@Cayton
I see and yes, I do very much appreciate anthropology or else I wouldn’t be majoring in it considering such bleak job prospects it has ;)

I very much appreciate your enthusiasm towards Berkeley @Zalrons, but all the lovely things you listed about UCLA have a great hold on me, as does the potential to intern at record labels/venues/radio stations. And not a non-stalker note, a lot of bands I like are based in LA (that means, hello to frequent shows and possibilities to network with the indie bands I like).

@anthroflo, yeah, I feel you! LA has a couple of stores I would love to intern/work for (nudie jeans and clae). What are your favorite bands?

@Zalrons, have you committed to Berkeley?
My favourite bands based in LA are Local Natives, The Pierces, Incubus, and Red Hot Chili Peppers.
What bands are you into?
The music has always been a big part of my life and the area I lived in never allowed for any real involvement and I would love to work in music so UCLA has a very very strong hold on me because of that.

@anthroflo, I SIR’d to LA! And I definitely approve of incubus and RHCP. I haven’t heard of the other two. I’ll have to check them out. My favorite band is definitely modest mouse. I don’t listen to a lot of different groups and most of what I listen to was passed down from my older sister. Like dashboard/ death cab/ brand new.

That’s awesome you’re so into music! I had no idea LA was a good spot for music but it makes sense considering it’s like the #2 most populated city in the US.

LA has more to offer on a student budget. Concerts every week, clubs, sporting events, cheap and delicious food, amusement parks and outdoor recreation. San Francisco is great, but a lot more expensive.

I don’t know when people say there is nothing to do in Berkeley and so much to do at UCLA. Westwood is boring and anything in proximity which everyone considers “LA” is just as far as Berkeley to SF by BART.

I agree UCLA has nice dorms, better dorm food, and a cleaner campus, along with athletics. But you’ll get sick of dorm food anyways, and the city of Berkeley has incredible food.

For me, the decision is purely academic because I know I’ll have a good time at either, but I’ve lived real close to UCLA all my life.

Nice @Zalrons!
What made you choose UCLA?
Well, Local Natives and The Pierces are very different from Incubus and RHCP, but I love them all just the same (: Hope you enjoy their music if you decide to check them out! I don’t know a lot by Modest Mouse, I liked one of their songs years ago and checked out the album but wasn’t too keen on it.

There is a lot of great music out there to get to know and explore!

Yup, music is pretty much all I would spend my life doing if I had the luxury.
LA can be a great spot for music. There are a lot of labels and a lot of venues. The big problem with LA and music is the over saturation of musicians and the fall of A&R as well as the extinction of artist development. I love music as an art form but have looked heavily into the business side of it because the business side is brutal and if you are not informed you will be taken advantage of like nothing else. I could probably rant about it for a while but it probably wouldn’t mean anything to anyone not into music in that way.

Ahem.
Berkeley/Oakland thug life all the way. no doubt, fa sho.
That is all.
