to live on campus or off??

ok im transferring to fsu next fall as a junior and was wondering what were my chances of getting into the one of the on campus apartments? or if it would be better to jsut live off campus in student affiliated apartments?

I would suggest going off campus. Chances are you are not going to get put in one of the better on campus apartments because you are new. How it works is FSU housing allows for returning students to receive first priority in housing. It’s a number system. So to speak you will behind current fresh., soph, and possible juniors or seniors that want to return to live on campus. Even with the new halls being built this summer should be completed now, you still will probably end up in Rogers or McCollum. Not saying they are bad but I would rather live off campus where I have my own room and everything is a bit nicer. Only draw backs are that basically anywhere is going to be more expensive. But in my opinion it is worth it. Some places to check out:

Campus Circle- close to campus, brand new so when you arrive it will be a year old
Grand Marc- fairly new I lived there last year closest apt. to campus behind BK
Tenn. St.- Ok place to live nice units in my opinion I wouldn’t suggest walking to campus, but free bus route.
Theres plenty of others to choose from really. I would say retreat or West10 they are nice themselves but just sooooooooo far away from main campus area.

West 10 is near Tennessee st and Ocala its not that far.

West10 from Ocala is a solid 1.5-2 mile hike. From there to school is about another .5-1 mile distance. So I don’t what you consider close but 2-3 mile walk to class, or coming home from the strip or bajas, lit is just something I would not want to do. So I would consider that pretty far from campus

I’m sure OP will be bringing their car. If you even want an off campus option I assume you have a car, bc if you don’t you might as well just live on campus. So assumed they had a car that’s why I said its not far.

wannabeMD92, do you have a specific budget? Places like Campus Circle are nice, but my friend lives there in a 4/4 and it’s like $725 per month not including electric.

It’s impossible to say which is truly better, or what you should do- that decision is ultimately going to be up to you. It’s going to depend on what your budget is, whether you have transportation to get to and from an off-campus apartment (if you don’t have a car, you’re then entirely dependent upon the bus or walking).

As a transfer student, if you apply for housing, there’s a very good chance that you will be able to get on-campus housing. While the likely placement is Rogers, there’s a very small chance that you will be able to get into one of the other buildings.

Rogers next year will likely be around $500-525 a month, which includes all your utilities (water, electric, internet- only thing that isn’t included is TV, if you want that). If you’re on a tight budget, that might be the best option. It might not be what you want, but if you have very limited choices, it might be the best option for you.

Compared to Rogers, Ragans and Traditions are expensive. Ragans is upwards of $800 a month, and Traditions is almost $900 a month. The odds though are very low that you will be placed in either of those buildings.

papertiger has a point though, about having a car. I would assume that anyone wanting to live off-campus isn’t going to be relying too heavily on the FSU or Star Metro bus routes, which often aren’t reliable.

Rogers is not worth paying more than what it is now. It’s run down and they don’t keep up with anything. I don’t even have any of my stuff in the cabinets or drawers. All my stuff is still in locked storage containers b/c I’m paranoid of bugs here and it touching surfaces that are sooo old and icky. lol I’m sounding high maintence right now, but I like my living quarters to be clean. Plus it’ll be easier when I eventually move out.
I totally say look for off campus apartments, but get ahead start on looking because it can be ridiculous and stressful looking for affordable, decent and safe areas to live here in Tally.

actually im not bringing my car until the spring after i transfer so im going to have to rely on the bus fo the fall.

I would check out places on W Call Street if I were you. Very, very close to campus! One of my old roommates lived in Whitehall and it seemed like a nice place. There are other places on Call Street such as Colony Club and University Village.

I will also be transferring in fall 2013, I was wondering if you had decided on living on or off campus yet?

ive decided im doing off campus
