To many units at ccc?

I’m at California Community College right now, and some of my friends are saying that if you have above a certain number of units UCs won’t accept you? Because I took random classes I didn’t need my first few semesters, and because I want to pursue other interests in some classes that aren’t related to my major (for example, I want to take a few poly sci classes even though I’m an astrophysics/math major) I will have well over 120 units.

Some are saying that it doesn’t matter, that the extra classes won’t transfer (which I already knew, I was just taking them to learn) and some are saying that it will penalize me? From what I’ve read as long as I haven’t taken any at a 4 year institution I will be fine.

I’m interested in UC Berkeley and UCLA, but also some out of state private schools. (Then others are saying that private schools will automatically reject me because I have to many units).

Does anyone know the true answer? I would think that the extra units just don’t transfer, only the 60 or 90 do.

If they are all CC units, you have nothing to worry about at the UCs. I have no clue about private schools.

They all count towards your GPA (if they are UC transferable), but you only get so many counted toward your degree at a universlity. (Typically 70 semester/105 quarter units)

^^^^ agree

Thanks Luckie!! that’s what I thought I just wanted to be sure.

the policy is at http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/files/uc-transfer-maximum-limitation-policy-chart.pdf You will be fine

The extra units won’t count towards the total you need for a UC diploma, but if the extra classes happen to satisfy a requirement then it still gets checked off.
