Hi everyone. I have a major decision to make within the next 15 hours and I need all the advice I can get. So my question is:

I just finished my freshmen year, undergraduate at a state university(in the business school). Now, I have been accepted at NYU Stern as a transfer student. My dilemma is-- should I stay in my state university, where I have a pretty good chance of getting a solid (3.7-3.9) GPA, or go to Stern where getting A's is much harder due to the sheer diligence of the students and the "Stern Curve" in which only a certain percentage can get A's?

So, now that many of you are in law school and/or graduates of NYU Stern, I want to ask, which university (NYU Stern business school or a decent state business school) should I attend to get into a respected law school.

Now, there's also the question: Is the much higher tuition at NYU Stern worth spending just so I can impress law schools?

This is a lot, but I would really appreciate any advice!!!

You should differentiate between short-term and long-term happiness. In the short-term, s/he might be happier in one school, but the payout from attending that school may result in lower happiness in the long-term than had s/he attended the other school.

Also, assuming s/he can’t tell the future and can’t lead double lives, how will s/he know where s/he will be happiest?

I don’t need to differentiate. If the op goes where the s/he is happiest, the op will do the best that s/he can. There is no “payout” difference. If s/he goes where s/he will be happy and do the best, then that is where the payout will be greatest.

To your second point, that is why people transfer.

Hey Thanks for all the advice. But there’s no way I can predict the future and I can’t tell where I will be happier. But to point out, I am fine (not fed up) of my current university. But you see, NYU Stern has “the name”, and if I decide to apply to prestigious law school, will “the name” be a major factor( i know not a tipping point) in getting accepted. Or should I just save up my money (the state university is 3 times cheaper) and still get into a respected law school?

My other option is to go to Stern, hopefully with “the name” and all the connections they have, work for a couple years after graduating in the business world, and then apply to law school. If I stay in my current university, I will be able to attend those really high priced law schools without having to go into full-time work.

So, what I’m basically saying is the only plus thing happening for NYU Stern right now is “the name”.

GPA will matter much more than the name. I say stay where you are–you’ll also save a ton of money, which is great, because law school is SUPER expensive.
