to retake or not to retake...

I took satII Spanish and got a 530, placing me into SPANR 123, which will require I this class and another to complete my lanugage requirement.

My questions are:

Should I study, retake the test, and try to score over a 590 so I can skip SPANR 123, or should I just take two semesters of Spanish?

If I do end up passing 590 and I only have to take SPAN 209, then would I be more likely to get a lower grade than if I took SPANR 123?

How does the difficulty compare between SPANR 123 and SPANR 209?

Are you enrolled at Cornell?

It depends. How many years of Spanish did you take in high school?

I took 4 years of spanish in high-school and I'm currently taking AP Spanish. I was accepted ED to Cornell and I am in the class of 2010. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

It really depends on how comfortable you are with it.

I took 6 years of Spanish (for 2 years with a sub for the real teacher who was on maternity leave), took the cornell placement test and scored a couple points too low to take 209.

While I could have reviewed my spanish notes, and tried to place into 209, I figured it was better to be in the top of my class in 123 then in the bottom of 209 especially since my course load is pretty heavy this semester with 19 credits.

So, I'm taking 123 this semester. It's a bit of work, like we have a couple worksheets due everyday. But I've seen most of the stuff before, so I'm getting between an A and an A- just by doing all my assignments and prior knowlege helps a lot with exams.

I would take 123 if I were you. You're much more likely to get a solid grade, and its good review if you're not quite placing into 209.

StPlayrXtreme, are there a lot of essays in 123?

Thanks for the advice StPlayrXtreme. That was the logic I was using but I wanted to make sure someone else at Cornell shared the same point of view.

Does anyone know how much of the grade in Spanish 123 is dependent on in-class essay or speaking participation? I seem to have difficulty with conversation and on-the-spot essay writing.

i am in spanish 123

it is one annyoing class, i would try to place out of it

i am gettin around an A, my test average is like a 94-95. You get a 1 hour test every 2 weeks, every tuesday, which they call a prueba. It is a 1 hour test boys and girls, and each covers more material than your midterms in high school

But then if I place out of it wouldn't it be more difficult to get an A in Spanish 209?

Spanish 209 is easy (at least when I took it two years ago). In fact, I'd call it the easiest class I've taken at Cornell.

norcalguy can you please desribe for me the % breakdown of the Spanish 209? Is it mostly verbal, writing, listening, or speaking etc.?

That was first semester freshman year. No way I remember the exact breakdown.

Little of the grade was devoted to HW and participation. There was this "interview" by a Spanish professor where they basically gave you a photo and ask you to say as much about it as you can. Most of the grade, not surprisingly, was locked up in the tests. The tests were 2-days long. 1st day is the usual stuff. 2nd day was an in-class essay related to either a story we read or a movie we watched. The tests were pretty easy (I don't think I scored less than 95 on any of them). On the essays they took off a pt. for each mistake you made (ANY mistake). I generally got an A- on those. Final was pretty easy, entirely multiple choice. I have heard from a friend that the class is slightly different now though.

so bball87, does Spanish 209 sound more difficult in terms of the activities such as the "interview" and tests? Do you need to speak or write essays as a significant portion of your grade? What is the general breakdown of Spanish 123?

I have a 690 in SAT II German w/listening - does that remove me from the lang requirement? - i have applied RD to engineering
