I accept your concessions.

Hey, we all know Rice is up there academically, but I want to know how the students are treated. Are the teachers kind and helpful?

Antiques:

My daughter’s best friend visited there (she got into Wash U., UCLA, and is waiting on Rice–her decision will be between Rice and UCLA, ultimately), and she was treated like gold. The girl who was her host, the kids in the dorm/dining common, in the lecture and seminar classes she visited, were all “sweet” to her and kept trying to give her information. The university liaison who handed her over to her overnight host was very kind. In the two classes that she attended, both professors, at the end of class (she had been introduced to them at the beginning of class–as I mentioned, one was lecture size, one was seminar size) asked her questions about where she was from and did she have any questions.

I know two kids personally who attend Rice who are in love with the school. The best friend also met a girl who had transferred from a top university and expressed how incredibly nice the folks were at Rice relative to her other school, where she hadn’t been treated badly, by any means; she had merely been underwhelmed and felt that a lot of the students in the old school were pretentious and disingenuous, which was not her experience at Rice.

Hope that helps.

My s had nothing but exceptionally high praise for all but one of his professors (that is a story for another time, but suffice it to say that if that faculty member tries again to “take” his senior design project to a private corporation, they will discover it has been patented by students at Rice U.) and the Res College Masters were the kindest human beings onthe face of this earth. Cannot say enough wonderful things about Rice, teh studnets and faculty. Chill students, despite being bright, driven and motivated.

Was sad to see Rice and Baylor M.C call off their formal merger plans, but they still have a close collaboration (and the Rice/Baylor program), and opportunities at the Houston MC across the street abound for the undergrads.

dimsum, i can see right through you, dude. making a new account doesn’t fool me ;)

Mindboggling how much free time Dimsum has on his hands and an endless repository of vitriol.

Which is dimsums’ new screenname (or has it been pulled already?) I want to steer clear of ■■■■■■.

I always think of him as ‘dimbulb’.

Mindboggling how much free time Rice students and parents spend obsessing about me.

I would guess that parents and students of all the threads ■■■■■■ post on have equal opportunity annoyance responses.

i swear, dimsum123 is the same person as interestingguy!!!

if not, you should still be ashamed of yourself, boy!

i gotta admit though, he’s a pretty astute fellow haha

^^ Lol, I agree with the last statement…

dimsum123: I’ll get you that Diet Coke when you give me back the 4 minutes I wasted reading your posts, thanks.

“Taking a holistic approach,” my Diet Coke > your 4 minutes.

Maybe you should try drinking faster dimsum

time is money… 4 minutes > diet coke.

besides, diet coke gives you cancer anyways, lol

I’ve seen the other schools that Stanford students are applying to, and the three common ones (outside of HYP) were Rice, Duke, and UChicago. Most of the people seemed to consider those latter three in the same light, as matches to low reaches.

So there’s a start. Whether HYPSM are peer schools as well really depends on who you ask and what factors you consider. Quality of life wise Rice is a peer school with Stanford and maybe Yale, and from what I’ve heard HPM would be significantly lower. Education wise they’re probably all pretty close, depending on which discipline you choose. Prestige wise it’s not even close for most people. Difficulty of acceptance also has a large disparity.

I’d say if any of the HYPSM are peer schools of Rice, it’s Stanford. They certainly seem to be pretty similar.

Other possible peers: Reed College, Wash U St Louis, CMU

Cornell, Northwestern, UChicago, Washu, Vanderbilt, Emory, Duke
