To Send or Not To Send?

Hiya Fellas,
Well my UVA app is now finished. The only thing I have left to do is decide whether or not to send my SAT Subject Tests. I took the tests in December and was Ill prepared. I recieved a 630 Literature, 610 Math II, and 600 US History. I know UVA dosen't require SAT II's but strongly recommends them. My question is - would sending these scores in only hurt me? I'm taking the tests in January again. should I wait till then to send in my SAT II's?

Thanks for the help again guys.

Send your scores.

It will definitely not hurt you. Send them in!

Thank You Dean J! That is very relieving. Should I put a note on the additional information section of the CA letting he reader know I will be sending in January scores?
Thanks so much for the help Dean J

If you’d like…but the reader isn’t going to hold the application up until late February to see those scores. They will be seen in later rounds of review.

Alright thanks. I know that the first readers of my application won’t see my updated scores, but atleast the later hopefully will.

While we are at the topic of sending scores, I have a quick question. I took the ACT three times, however one of the times I got a 21 in science but I have my highest math score on that test date. So should I still submit it?? I’m pretty sure that dean J has said that the coputers take the best from each section for the act, I just want to confirm. Thanks

We don’t super score the ACT. At the same time, we usually just look at the composite score.

thanks dean J, I was misinformed then! I knew that you guys don’t recalculate the composite, but I thought you took the highest of each section and the highest composite and looked at them. but, now i know! thanks again

Dean J,

what if i took the act twice, improving on it by one composite score the second time while individually improving on everything except the science (which decreased incredibly). should i still send both to show that i can do better in science, or do i just send the higher composite score that has the lower science score? thanks!

Do whatever you feel comfortable doing. I’d send everything.

Wait, UVA lets you choose what scores to send? I thought UVA asked applicants to send all standardized testing information.

If you want to spend hours worrying about which scores to send, fine. But don’t do it because of us. I think you should just send your scores and stop thinking about that part of the application.

Many admission officers think Score Choice is silly. The profession, overall, is looking to admit a great group of students. We want to see students at their best. We’re trying to build a case for each of our applicants. Even before we automated the score second of our system so that we only see the top scores, we only looked at the best scores.

In the paper days, we just circled the best score in each section as we went through the files. These days, we’re lucky to have the system auto pick the best scores for us.

If you want to know a school’s policy on standardized testing, you can look at this document:

http://professionals.collegeboard.com/profdownload/sat-score-use-practices-list.pdf

It is from College Board and thus only for the SAT, but I’m sure the college’s policy for the SAT would hold true for the ACT as well.

As you may see, UVA does accept score choice, but strongly encourages you to send all scores because it can only help you.

(I sent in all my ACTs and two of my three SATIIs because my MathII score was embarrassing compared to my other two scores, so I am pretending it doesn’t exist haha)

P.S. - Dean J, I think it’s really cool that UVA has somebody on these forums answering questions for UVA and for the CommonApp in general. That’s a lot farther than most colleges go to help students with the application process. I really appreciate your taking the time to answer people’s questions.

My pleasure, Fallen. Thanks for posting a source for other students. It’s good to know some know where to look for answers to these sorts of questions. :)
