Hello CC’ers, in the interim of my last post there were some developments that forced me to take an all-nighter. For some odd reason whenever I went to school the day after the all-nighter I felt much more alert than I usually do(I always felt groggy & cranky right after I woke up). I decided to change my sleep schedule to better accommodate this, 9 hours of sleep every other day; this has been working well for me so far as I get much more hw done at night than I do at any other time & i’ve been generally happier. My question is will there be any long term health maluses in my nine hours every other day schedule & if so how could I avoid those maluses. Thank you all!!!

This type of sleep deprivation will result in the recurring misuse of words such as “maluses”.
What you are doing is neither sustainable or healthy and will not end well. You need sleep.

Don’t do this. There are so many studies that show negative consequences on health from sleep deprivation , and conversely show benefits to mental and physical health from regular sleep patterns. High schoolers over 15yrs old should aim for 9ish hours every night, some need more. If you cannot get your homework and ECs and eat and take care of yourself and still have 9Ish hours most nights, you are taking on too much.
9 hours is the target. We encouraged our kids to get 9. There is no underperformance in school.
Get sleep. My son’s school started every course planning session with this question: “Am I getting enough sleep?” If the answer was no, which in your case it would be, the goal was to realign academics and activities so the answer would be yes.
Seriously, this is impossibly hard on your physical and mental health. Your current sleep pattern supports neither, and you owe yourself that.
If you’re in high school and feel that you have to pull all nighters, ever, imagine what college will be like. You need to learn how to be efficient. There’s no better book on the subject that I’ve encountered than the one linked below. Do yourself a life changing favor. Get it. Read it. Now.
There is no “question” here. You need to sleep. Your body works on circadian rhythms. There’s a biological reason for that. Don’t mess with your body’s natural tendencies.
Are your parents or guardian aware of your sleep issues? Start there. You should not be risking your health for the sake of short term studying efficiency.
Okay you all are correct, I guess I just assumed that since I would be getting the same amount of sleep per week, I’d be fine. But I’ll try my best to make the transition back to normal sleeping hours.
I can relate to the whole not sleeping thing. I’m a band kid, so every Friday and a lot of Saturdays I get home at horrible hours of the night. Getting back to the high school (and then driving home) at 4am was the worst.
And also no you need sleep. you’re going to jack up your health.
