well i have seen this question everywhere: if i get a 5 (or maybe at least a 3?) should i start with math 1b or math 1a.
i know i got a 5 (AB) and a 4 (BC) and a teacher at Cal recommended i start with 1a instead of 1b...can those who have been in this position comment?

you should definitely skip 1a (assuming you got a 5 on the ab subsection of the bc exam). skipping bc will really depend on what your major is. and you should check if you can skip it. i dont remember if you need a 4 or 5 to skip 1b. i personally skipped 1b and it didnt hurt. math 53 is pretty much new stuff on top of the stuff you learn in math 1a.

is it okay to take Math 53 if you got a 5 on BC?

I want to ask this same question, but for other reasons.

It seems that all the Math 1A discs are full, but there's a few open ones in Math 1B's Bergman.

Now here's the question, I want to major either in Econ, or Applied Math with Econ concentration, but both seem to require Math 1A.

My question - if you leap straight into Math 1B w/out doing 1A, will you actually lower/cancel your chances of being accepted to those two above majors (however illogical such an outcome might seem - after all if you do OK on 1B presumably you'd have aced 1A).

skipping 1a will not lower your "chances" of getting into econ or applied math/econ. as i understand it, as long as you have a sufficient gpa and apply at the proper time in your college years, you will make it into the needed major. i would suggest skipping whatever you can for math with ap's. this means, with a 5 on bc, skip to 53; with anything lower but still passing, skip to 1b.

I took math 150 and 151 in HIgh School, I got A in 150 and B in 151. But I want to major in Business with HAAS and a nother science, and their prereqs require either 1a, 1b, 16a, or 16b. Is it ok if i skip 1b and use my 151 credit to pass that, and take 53 freshman fall semester to help me get my prereqs for the science major done faster? Does HAAS care if I didn't take one of the math classes that they require at Berkeley?

i am planning to go to med school, so i was wondering whether i should retake math 1a, even though i got a 5 on my a/b exam.

if you're going to med school then take math 16? isn't that the rule of thumb?

the L&S berkeley website recommended math 1a/1b
