to take a GAP year or go to a college?

<p>Hello!!!
I'm an international student and I have graduated from High school this year. Now I really want to try, to go to US college, but when I decided to go to US to continue my studies, it was too late to apply anywhere. So now, I have to decide, whether to go to a local or Turkish University OR take a gap year. In both cases I'm aplanning to apply this fall to many universities and colleges (to all the IVIES), but will they consider me as a freshman if I'm already studying in a first year of a University?
I have taken SAT once, almost without preparation, when I wasn't planning to go tp US, not seriously, and I got 1520, math - 700. Also SAT Subjects - Math/Physics - 700. I guess if I prepare well this summer for SAT, I will get a good enough score. GPA is perfect, ectracurriculars are not :( I'm trying to volunteer and do any kind of activities as much as possible now.
btw, is mongoloid URM?
And also one thing bothering me: how can I make my gap year spent well? I mean, what can I do, what can I tell the college why I took a gap year? Is running own business a good reason? (my planned major is economics)
Please, any advise would be a good help for me, thank you.</p>

<p>Whether or not you’ll be considered be considered a freshman will depend on how many credits you have coming in to that transfer school. If you’re sure about applying as a transfer, study to improve your SATs and SAT IIs, and get more involved in extracurricular activities. If you do take a year off, there are plenty of things you can do – volunteer, travel, run your own business (but with a set limit of 1 year?)</p>

<p>You should not say you are “Mongoloid” on you app. In America, it is an out of favor term for people with Downs’ Syndrome (mental retardation). If you are of Mongolian extraction, you should say that. It would probably be a URM classification.</p>

<p>If you want your best chance at admission, you should take a gap year. You can do whatever you want during that time. Many students pursue interests that they didn’t have time for in high school. Running your own business is a good idea, so is doing volunteer work. </p>

<p>If you haven’t already done so, read through everything at [EducationUSA</a> | Study Abroad, Student Visa, University Fairs, College Applications and Study in the U.S. / America](<a href=“http://educationusa.state.gov/]EducationUSA”>http://educationusa.state.gov/) then make an appointment with the counselors at the advising center closest to you. There are two in Turkey [EducationUSA</a> - Find an Advising Center](<a href=“http://www.educationusa.info/Turkey]EducationUSA”>http://www.educationusa.info/Turkey) If you can’t visit in person, find out how much help they can give you by telephone or email.</p>

<p>As an international applicant, you aren’t URM. That category is for domestic applicants.</p>

<p>thank you very much for your fast respond guys,
@collegestandard, I think I will be able to continue running my business later, online, or I’ll leave it to my sisters.
@Joan52, thank you for that info :)</p>

<h2>@happymomof1, Thank you for the links, but I have already gone there and talked, but I just realized that I hadn’t visited the website!! I will use it, thanks!</h2>

<p>Is number of recommendation letters limited? if I take one from volunteer boss/coordinator, will that be fine?</p>

<p>Each college/university will indicate the number and type of recommendation letters that you need. Some will offer you the option of sending an additional letter. That would be a good time to use a letter from your boss or supervisor. You also might be able to use that letter if you apply for any specific scholarships that you apply for.</p>

<p>Mongoloid is not URM. Congrats, you will be considered Asian and will have to compete with the kids from India, china, japan, etc.</p>
