To take a self-studied AP exam or not to?

Hi. I took AP Psych at a community college last year and I'm thinking about taking the AP Psych exam (administered by college board) this May. However, I'm not sure if I should.

I've talked to my high school counselor about it but she told me basically that there was no point in taking the exam because since I already took the AP psych class at a community college, it is on my transcript and 1) transfers over to my future college or 2) if it doesn't transfer over, then scoring a 5 on the AP exam won't transfer my credits over anyways.

However, I very much DOUBT this information because almost everyone I've talked to told me the opposite. I also asked her if taking the AP exam anyways and scoring a 5 will impress colleges, but she said they wouldn't really care because I took the psych community college class.

Is she wrong? And if she is, how do I register to take the AP psychology test? My school doesn't offer AP Psych and I'm pretty sure my high school counselor won't help. Thank you!

Well if you are aiming for a certain AP Scholar award (ie National AP Scholar) then take it. Otherwise I would agree with your counselor.

Thanks, TrueGrit. I didn’t even know the AP Scholar award existed. Do you think I should aim for National AP Scholar (If I take 5-6 APs next year and get 4’s and 5’s, I would qualify)? Thank you!
