Hi CC, I have a little dilemma. There was a curriculum change at my school and I was really supposed to be in Geometry this year. I was thinking I could take Geometry online so I could start Freshman year in Algebra 2, and get to Calculus BC senior year. That way I could get through all the math offered.
If I dont take geometry online I'll only be able to get up to Calculus AB and take standard level classes. (I'm in the IB classes). Is it worth it to spend the $400some dollars to take it online? Does it matter to colleges if I was not in the most difficult math? ? ? ?(This is totally the districts fault, everyone in my level had to repeat a year). Help!

Also I don't plan to major in anything math related in college.... If that matters. Everything else on my classes is hardest offered.

I am doing it a bit differently.

I took Geometry IN CLASS as a freshman and now I'm taking Alg II right now over the summer. I'd recommend it this way, Alg II is such a breeze to take online.

But shoould I take it or not?

I took Algebra 2 in 8th grade, then Geometry in 9th grade, then Alg 3 (precalc) in 10th grade. Then, I took Calc BC my junior year.

What is the sequence of math courses at your school? One of my friends took Geometry and Alg. 1 in the same year so he could take Calc AB senior year.

Are you considering taking Calc AB one year, and then BC the next? That is a really bad idea. If you are going to take BC, there is no reason to take AB first. It would just be a waste of time.

OK this is the math sequence at my school :
(IB Standard Level Sequence)
Geometry - Algebra 2 - Precalculus - Calculus AB

or if I take the online::
(IB Higher Level Math sequence)
Algebra 2 - Precalculus - Calculus AB - Calculus BC

They're IB classes by the WAY

"But shoould I take it or not?"

Did you even read my post?

Yeah I did!

I would highly recommend that you take Geometry in school and Algebra II online or through summer school. I say this because Geometry is [at least for me, it was] a very proof-oriented course. You will learn much more in a classroom setting than in an online classrooom because your peers will offer different perspectives to each proof, and each will approach it differently. Thus, you will gain a very thorough understanding of Geometry. In an online classroom, it will likely be just you and the professor. Proofs will become drag-and-drop multiple choice questions. Because Geometry is a very visual subject, it seems a bit unnatural to learn it through a computer.

Algebra II, on the other hand, is much more computational/logic-oriented. Also, it is a review of Algebra I and shouldn't take very long to learn if you are dedicated. You wouldn't be missing out on much if you took an online Algebra II course because it is a relatively less visual subject [when compared to Geometry]. As Armando said, Algebra II is a breeze to take online.

My $0.02, anyway. ;)

Isn't an online course around $250?

Not for 2 semesters.^^

Actually I would say take Geometry online and Algebra 2 at school. Geometry isn't VERY important for higher math, but you should have much knowledge of Algebra 2 for PreCalc and Calc.

So you think it's worth it? But does it matter to colleges if I'm not taking the hardest math?

Well, obviously it would be better if you were in the higher math. However, colleges aren't going to reject you solely on that. As long as you take the hardest classes offered to you in *most/i subjects, you should be fine. It really depends where you're applying. If you are applying to lower tier schools, they could give a rat's a$$ what math you're taking.

I personally hate online classes. I have taken two and they are miserable. It's hard to motivate yourself to study hard in them. Plus, they are extemely time consuming. Geometry is a very visual subject for many people. I struggled in it because I had a hard time with the "spaciality" of the subject. I liked having my teacher being there to explain things to me and put them in different terms. So, if you're like me...don't take the class online.

Again, it is just a total waste of time to take AB, and then BC. Just skip AB!

I plan to apply to Ivies

how could I skip AB?
