So I've got a bit of a predicament. I have taken the ACT twice, once with no studying and once with about 3 or 4 days of prep. I received a score of 31 both times and was less than thrilled with the results. I know that there are one or two more opportunities to take the ACT again, and this time I will be studying starting now. I am anticipating getting a 34+ with studying. Here is where the problem lies. I have yet to take the SAT. None of the schools I am applying to (Yale, Harvard, Duke, JHU, a few others of others) require the SAT, but I've been told that it looks good. So which do I study for, ACT, SAT, or both?

Most of those schools that you are applying to will take the ACT or SAT equally. If you have more experience with the ACT than the SAT, then I would recommend for you to study the ACT. However, you should take a practice SAT to see how you do on it. If you do better on the ACT than the SAT, then study for the ACT, and vice-versa. Also, if your ACT and SAT scores are similar (using an unofficial score-comparison chart), you could take both and submit both since colleges have their own “charts” for ACT and SAT score comparison. Hope this helps.

Take a few practice tests. Take whichever one you score higher on.
