To take or to not take Calc I and II

Hey guys,

I’m an incoming freshman that is probably going to UCF next Fall. I’m going to be in the Honors program and have applied for LEAD scholars. I’m a Mechanical Engineering major who is also looking into minors like Engineering Leadership and Comp Sci. I also took BC Calc in high school and scored a 4 on it and the AB subscore. I also took a Higher Level IB course in mathematics in high school.

Should I take Calc I and II again to master the subjects as with the above scores I could test out? I’m currently leaning towards taking Calc II but not I.

Side Question: Does would Comp Sci help me be more competitive as an ME after school?

Thank you!

Unfortunately, you need a score of 5 on the AB subsection to test into calc 2 and a 5 on BC to test into calc 3 I believe, you can check the course catalog to be sure tho

@blountwil2 at UCF a score of 4 or 5 will give you the same credit towards Calc 1 and II (MAC 2311 and 2312), but if the typical score needed is a 5 at other schools then that might show that I should still take II. There also is no way to test out of Calc 3.

I’m actually in a similar scenario with AP Physics C as well, but I’m pretty much set on testing out of the first semester and taking the second semester again just to make sure I got the concepts down.

According this page, a score of 5 is required to actually take the next level course. You should probably email the department about this, but I believe a 4 will get you credit but you still need to take the class again
