To the 2008 EDers!

Any of you guys send in the “part 1” electronically and use the paper application for the essays and other parts? Everything but part 1 was sent through mail…is that bad?

I was going to use the paper application for my essays because I was afraid that I wouldn’t get my Why Brown? to fit in the space allotted online, but I wound up with just the right amount of characters to fit.

I don’t think there is any difference between sending it all in on paper, sending it all in electronically, or sending it half and half. Unless, of course, you have terrible handwriting.

Thanks! That is what I heard too, but then I sent the part 1 and it said that they will not look at your application until both are sent, but i figure that if they get part two in the mail it should be ok, right? My essays are slightly longer than they suggest online, but ironically the topic of your choice essay is exactly 500 words =)

Yes, that should be fine.

so crzy2rite, you were able to fit more words/characters onto the paper app than on the online limit? and how much longer were you able to make your essays. thanks!

Hi deatlhyhollows…btw, according to your username i am assuming that you are an HP fan! Did you hear about the whole Dumbledore coming out thing? I would have never guessed, but I guess if I reread the books, maybe I will see the connection!

About the application…i didn’t hand write it. I typed it and printed out all of the forms and wrote “see attached”. My “why brown” was about 300 words, the long answer exactly 500 and the “who told you” one was kinda long. About 180 words. According to what people have written on this forum, its ok to be over the limit, especially when they don’t give you an actual limit, but I tried for my PLME essays not to go over 700. Hope this helped an GL!

re: Dumbledore (off-topic, hope renix doesn’t bite my head off)
I didn’t see it as I read it, but looking back I can decipher her subtleties in terms of his relationship with Grindelwald, and it makes Dumbledore’s story just so much more poignant. Although I was a little disappointed with Rowling, because now she’s talking this up as if it was supposed to be a big part of the theme of tolerance for all. If that’s what she was aiming for, she should have made it more obvious in the story, instead of waiting for everyone to buy the book.

No one asked, but for reference, my long answer was 644 words, my “Why Brown?” was 248 words (1,490 chars - I’m submitting it online), and I’m still working on my “Who interested you in Brown?” short answer, but that is going to be within the character limit listed online. I’ll let you know what the word count turns out to be on that.

speaking of the ‘who interested you in brown,’ if no one did are you just being like ‘i did my own research cause i’m cool like that’? i mean, no one i know goes to brown or encouraged me to apply or anything…

Totally agree with the Rowling statement daveb…she really is making it a huge deal when really she shouldn’t be because if it was that important, it should have been more apparent in the book itself…

For the “who interested you in Brown” I was pretty lucky b/c one of the group leaders at the summer research program I attended was an alumnus and we had a college talk during one of the sessions where he presented his alma mater in all of its glory =)

But I don’t personally think the stories are going to vary too much for that question because either you found out at a college fair, or an alumnus, or you just figured it out…and seriously, its ivy league, they assume that you knew of it and decided to check it out. I don’t think its going to make or break anyone

Yeah, I’m basically saying that I found out about Brown through my own research, liked what I read, visited the campus and was sold. More or less. Out of all of the “essay” questions, since they alloted such little space for this one, my guess is this question is primarily for their own statistical purposes. If they get a lot of people saying they found it on their own, it means they are doing something right in the advertising department.

Look, I have no problem with her coming out with it now if she wasn’t going to make it obvious in the book (I guess it’s a treat for someone to figure out, but I don’t recall anyone mentioning something along the lines of, "yo, Dumbly loves Grindel), but I think she should have been bold enough to have either made this public knowledge immediately after the book came out. She didn’t because she didn’t want to run the risk of alienating buyers. Now that the craze is officially deflated, this is one way to not only get that little fact out, but to kind of push HP back into the limelight.

yea, the essay is probably a statistic. but for HP, I have to agree. I am not upset with Rowling about it, but I have observed that people who read the book and found this out recently are all just shocked. No one saw it coming. it’s almost like no one had even suspected it which was very weird to me because even though it doesn’t make any real effect on the main plot, Dumbledore is just one of those characters and it’s strange now that I miss that fact now that I think about it. Rowling is a fantastic author and people will be reading her books for the next century i am sure…there is no need to worry about being forgotten, at least in my opinion =)

To all you EDers: Have you already submitted your application? If not, when do you plan to?
I’m trying to decide whether I should just submit it tonight, or give myself another day to mull over it.

I just finished up all my essays and everything, but I think I’m giving it another day to make sure everything is in order and there aren’t blaring typos.

BTW, again for reference, my “Who interested you in Brown?” response wound up being 80 words and 492 characters.

I’m too scared to submit it because I am deathly afraid of making a mistake. Even though I’ve reread every essay many, many times. =s

thanks for your responses…for reference, my “why brown” is 230 words, 1500 char, “who interested you in brown” is a shrimpy 73 words and 499 char, and my long essay is 550 words. I finally got my PLME essays under the char limit this week, around 500-580 words. Looks like we all have to submit our apps this weekend, more or less. good luck!

Oh and I submitted my app Friday night. Kind of anxious to check status, really disappointed I have to wait two weeks to do so.
