sigh... okay then. how did you get to know her? she must have participated in some really cool international stuff. I just hope that Yale offers the three singaporeans enough aid to persuade them not to apply RD anymore =X

what do you mean about the SAT scores, and how Yale decides to reject or defer people? Do you mean to say SATs or ECs are more important?

I'm saying it's relative. If you're coming from a country like UK, they won't be lenient on a 690 writing score, but they will be thrilled if this comes from Kenya. Similarly, I understand that many people get 2300+ on their SATs in Singapore from what you said, so this is of course amazing, even in comparison to US scores, where people get low 2200s and this is deemed great. However, if many of you get very high SAT scores, they are NOT going to reject you over sb else who had 2400 whereas you had 2310. They are going to look at your extracurriculars. You're right in that it is country specific, but many countries are similar in that manner. Ecs come into play much more often, since SATs are not amply representative of an international's capacity. I know people in other countries who got 45 in IB (which is attained by five or so people worldwide out of the thousands IB kids) but didn't have stellar SAT scores - proof that SAT scores are more inconclusive for internationals..therefore, other things LIKE extracurriculars are more important. Of course, if you were in a country like Zimbabwe where nobody gets great SAT scores and you had 2310, you'd be looked upon as a superstar in that because they expect very low SATs, you're excelling beyond their expectations. If you are in UK (or singapore), you'll be one of the many with great SAT scores, so they'd think "great, now lets see what are his/her extracurriculars, so that we can decide if they have leadership/are involved/are active, and see if they are worthy of acceptance"...that's at least how I perceive it.

Perhaps it has to do with the fact that English is a native language in Singapore, so it is not as difficult to get a 2400 from Spore as to get a 2400 from say Greece?

In any case I know it is incredibly hard to get into Yale from the international applicant pool, and I hope you have more luck with the RD round, screwitlah!

There was 1 admit from Malaysia, from Petaling Jaya. (if anyone else would like to know # admits from his/her country or state, I have the numbers)

yeah, can anyone who got accepted post the numbers of students accepted from each country? unless it's confidential or something, i mean i'm just curious if anybody from poland was accepted, but i bet other internationals would like to know about their countries too

Screwitlah and others - those who have been accepted are able to see the number of admits from every country, and from the US the number of admits from each state and city. In addition, if an admit has allowed his/her name to be released on the site, I can see the name and high school as well. Posting numbers for every country would be very time consuming, but Poland has 1 admit from Legionowo, 33 Liceum Im M Kopernika (he has also released his name).

haha, well thanks debateaddict and amber. well I heard last year Yale accepted a total of 14 people from Singapore alone, so I really hope there'll still be room. but quite a few in the 14 are from international schools (i.e. non-Singaporean citizens, some American citizens), so I'm not gonna raise my hopes too high.

I'm not quite sure what went wrong with my app. I'm guessing they didn't like my 1200 word common app essay? (but hey, CA has no limit this year...but, Yale probably doesn't care about whether CA has limit or not that much) I (and various others) thought my essay quality was fine though

Maybe my ECs weren't too amazing? (I mean I didn't win any national 1st places or anything; I did win state 1st places though, and definitely presented a well-rounded profile).

I'd like to think my recs were very awesome, but not really sure here.

I got pretty much all As in super challenging courses and owned SATs (2370). Anyone want to help diagnose my problem/make a few hypothesis? Was it just essay length?

thanks amb3r. oh well, i think yale only admitted 2 in total from msia last year, so i'm going to be realistic come april.

fast27, but it is still before the deadline right? could they defer you because of that? i only sent mine in a couple of days before the deadline.

No, they don't automatically defer you or reject you for making mistakes like that. If you sent your application in September, it was waiting on a shelf for two months -- October, one month.
