The amount of these threads is getting ridiculous. We are not an admissions committee and thus can give you no insight into whether or not you’ll get in. The reality is that at Ivy League schools, based on my experience, there are TWO main ways to get in to these elite institutions…

One of these having some character about you that is just absolutely outstanding that sets you apart from the rest of the applicant pool (with the assumption you are also a well above-average student.) And no, perfect SAT’s, Valedictorian, and a laundry list of ECs do not count. This could be athletic ability, artistic ability, or some other extraordinary accomplishment.

The second one is to be an extraordinary student and just get lucky. The reality is that there are so many people out there who are valedictorian, have perfect SAT’s etc etc, that a large majority of them WONT get in. Stats alone will rarely get you in, and so unless you have some other attractive quality, it is a crapshoot whether or not this type of student will be accepted.

In my case, what got me in was athletic ability. I had 2100 SAT/4.1 weighted GPA, and was recruited for track & field. Even if you DO have some outstanding quality about you, theres a chance you wont get in, and so theres really no way to predict. So please, use this post as a disclaimer, because we dont know any more than you do about whether or not youll get in.

Good post, though. Although they want reassurance that they have a chance, colleges are becoming increasingly competitive (Brown just announced increased selectivity in transfer admissions) and the WAMC threads increasingly useless.

Haha I knew that would come up. I too did this at one point, before I realized it wasnt going to help me at all.

I wasnt trying to be an ass or anything, the point of that post was just simply to save the time of juniors and sophs who are asking people on a message board whether or not theyll get in, and to offer up what Ive learned on the admissions process through my experience and my friends experience.

heh heh. I like your post! I too have succumbed to the "my chances" threads a couple of times and then felt kinda silly afterwards. Anyway, thanks for saying what I've been wanting to say for a little while now.

your post is great man, I surely also have done a My chances post..and watch as perfect needle nose..people told me of my chances of getting in....haha...so thank you..alot

I've had email correspondences with Kay Kurashige (she heads admissions for West Coast I believe) and she has told me transfer admissions are quite low. This year, percentage wise, the admissions rate for transfers was lower than freshman. She said she is not sure how it will change in the upcoming years, but believes it will change.

I tried giving advice a few times... then I realized what an utter idiot I was being.

Bravo from me as well. Especially for these very selective schools, the only way to know that you are going there for sure is to open up that acceptance letter.
