To thoes who go to SU

How has your overall expiriance been at SU? It seems like a great school but I'd love to ehar a student perspective!

My son is a freshman. He does not go on CC, but I can relay questions to him. In general, he and his room mate, at dinner last night before their midterm break, said they are VERY happy with SU. The students are almost all very friendly, down to earth and nice kids–they made a lot of friends very quickly. The workload is challenging. No class is over 35 kids and 2 are under 20. All are taught by professors, not grad students. The teachers and administrators go out of their way to be helpful.

The food is excellent and varied. Although it is very rural, there is a lot to do and you do not need to drink to fit in. The campus is beautiful (top 20 nationally in Princeton Review and #1 in easiest to get around). The dorms and facilities are very nice.

Any specific questions?

Yabeyabe2,
Thanks for taking questions. I have one. What kind of imput do incoming freshman have in their housing choice? Do they have a detailed questionaire to say put night owls with night owls and early birds with early birds? Can a student choose to be in a substance free dorm? Thank you and you son for taking time to answer questions!

Swatmom,

Glad to help. Students receive a brochure describing the housing options, from liveliest dorm to the most quiet. They submit their choices and assignments are made on the basis of the date deposits were received (a reward for those who applied early decision or made up their mind quickly). Not surprisingly, the most popular choice is usually the liveliest, Smith (it has the most freshman, but is not Animal House by any means).

I do not recall whether there is a formal substance free dorm–frankly, as alcohol and drug regulations are enforced throughout the campus, and smopking is not permitted indoors anywhere, I think of all the dorms as substance -free (although I think it is naive to believe some kids don’t sneak stuff in).

SU circulates a roommate survey along the lines you describe–and, on the SU class of 2015 page, some kid is sure to post a survey so kids can make their own arrangments even earlier. The unofficial survey is likely to be longer–asking about favorite music, tv shows etc.

Roommates are asked by their Resident Advisor to sign a contract they work out with each other (or with the RA’s help if needed) about what is shared; quiet hours, etc.

Note that some dorms have coed floors (with separate but adjoining bathrooms) while others have male floors and female floors. I think coed floors encourage kids to become friends regardless of gender. My son reports his floor is very friendly and and virtually clique-free.

Is that helpful?
