To Those Accepted into Dartmouth:

After ninth grade I got all Bs and B+s in math and I got in this year

I got B’s in Calculus B/C taken at Harvard Univiversity Extension School and a B in Physics II, also at Harvard, though the Physics II course was after I had been accepted to D.

I haven’t had a B in high school, so do I have less of a chance? That’s kind of how this is coming off to me. Should have slacked more!

You have less of a chance if all you have done in HS is grade-grub.

Didn’t hmom point out that something like 40% of '12s are vals or sals? Not slackers.

Do you think I still get a chance to get into Dartmouth, if I have been rejected by Williams and waitlisted at University of Virginia?

I’m really excited about Dartmouth. On the other hand, I’m really worry I wont make it.

i got no likely letters…D sends out likely letters? oh i love subtle rejections haha

I’d be more worried about the waitlist at U VA–I’m assuming you are out of state–than the rejections from Williams. Williams is a very small school, and their acceptances can be very idiosyncratic. If you are instate for U VA, then it does not bode well. But you never know.

yournamehere: for the umpteenth time, most people who are accepted do not get a likely letter!

More than out of state, I’m international. So I guess that’s part of the reason. The international pool must be SO competitive this year, I think.

Consolation, do u apply to D too?

“for the umpteenth time…”

uh, this is actually the first time i heard this 'bout D. i didn’t ask the same question 'bout D umpteenth times.

Sorry, yournamehere, I assumed you would have read the threads on likely letters, in which various people have tried to reassure applicants that most accepted students don’t get likelies. I think its better for one’s peace of mind not to even know about them, frankly. Reading CC forums for some schools would give kids the impression that almost everyone who get in gets a likely, which is not even close to being true.

Good luck. You’ll know soon.

yea lol it’s alright.
i’m just worried out of my mind. CC can be unhealthy sometimes…
but thanks!

Consolation’s probably right- we’re a self selective group of people at CC, and we, in no way represent the entire population of people who get accepted. They probably only send likelies to acceptees which they accepted first (and keep in mind that admissions probably has thousands of applications…yours could be on the bottom of the pile or the top, depending on how efficiently they gather all your admissions materials.)

While we are on the topic of likely letters: Do any applicants who were deferred ED get likely letters?

I would strongly doubt it. If the applicant were strong enough to get a likely, or had enough of a hook to get a likely, they would have been admitted ED. I suppose if you have some mind-blowing accomplishment in the meantime it is possible, but then according to what people say the deferred apps are looked at last, so there may not even be time to send a likely.

D has a likely letter and had nothing lower than an A since 2nd grade in any course. Presently, with 5 APs plus honors Physics, she is finishing her senior year with 5 A+s (BC, Stats, Micro, Chem, Physics) and 1 A (AP Lit) and is the likely valedictorian at a competitive private school in Florida.

My S got straight Bs in English freshman and sophomore years.

(Same teacher both years, too.)

(She was not his favorite teacher.)

(And English is not his favorite subject.)

i was deferred ED and i haven’t heard of anyone getting a likely. i’m kind of hoping no deferrals got likely letters…otherwise i’m going to be pretty scared/sad!!

I never grade grub, I just managed to pull through with all A’s somehow. Only 8 APs however.

Admissions are so unpredictable. I’ve been told u need straight As to make Ivy, but apparently it’s not true.

Oh, CC…the only place where people would dream of saying “Only 8 APs”…
