To those familiar with NC State:

Is this common?

" + artTitle.replace("-","") + " - " + "Technician" + " - " + "Viewpoint" + "

I hope not. I can't remember the last time I've heard a UNC student bash NC State, nor does the school come up frequently in conversations. I'm just curious about what prompted this.

No but think of the way we talk about Duke… oddly similar!

Poor O’Donnell is trying to justify his university’s existence.

Oh who knows. There was an oped in the daily tarheel about a month ago that was bashing State for no real reason. Honestly I don’t see what the point is? Some rivalries are just really, really stupid. Someone calling me an elitist because I go to UNC is absolutely hilarious to me.

^ Actually I think those slogans you see around campus (“Duke is our evil twin, State is our ■■■■■■■■ cousin” or whatever) do have a very elitist ring to them.

Being a big fan of intercollegiate sports, I sometimes frequent fan boards for various schools to get the inside view of what is happening at the respective campuses and the opinions of both fans and alums. For instance, when ND was looking for a new football coach last year, it was very interesting to see the perspective of their fans as names were being bandied about in the news. It can be very enlightening and often humorous.

That said, the letter to the editor referenced above is truly tame when compared to the other places that NCSU fans rant about UNC. If you are so inclined, and have a strong stomach, visit NCSU’s sportsfans blog called packpride and I think you will be not only amazed but truly disheartened.

The level of hate and vitriol about UNC that is spewed on that site is higher than on any other college fan site I have ever seen anywhere. Most days they have more anti-UNC threads than they do talking about any of their own teams/players. When the problems arose last summer surrounding the UNC football program, that site went into a feeding frenzy…with organized efforts to send complaints to the UNC Board of Governors and highly inflammatory (and fictitious) accusations about UNC to journalists all across the country.

Having grown up in Ohio and now living in Texas I’ve been witness to a number of big rivalries, Ohio State vs Michigan, Texas vs A&M or Texas vs Oklahoma… but as big as those rivalries are,and they are HUGE, I’ve never seen or heard anything like what is written daily about UNC on packpride.

UNC and dook are part of what most consider to be biggest and best rivalry in college sports…most of the “dislike” between the two schools is, when truly examined, based on a long and hard earned mutual respect with the possible exception of a generally strong dislike for coach k, which many in the Triangle will tell you is well deserved.

The ill will that comes out of Raleigh and that is directed at UNC and Chapel Hill can sometimes be frightening. There are numerous incidents each year of UNC fans being accosted and attacked when in Raleigh for sporting events.

There’s a deeply seeded, unhealthy dislike that goes to anger among many NCSU alum…I’ve NEVER seen anything like it…and fervently hope I never see it anywhere else…

I love how the income “study” that he cited was actually just a non-scientific online survey that automattically disqualified you if you went on to grad school. UNC’s doctors, lawyers, and businesspeople make much more than NCSU’s farmers, but don’t try telling them that.

I believe all this ranting about the two universities is childish. Rivalries ARE childish. It is best to consider that whichever environment a student prefers, it is a given that he/she will perform the best there. Eadad, when I visited NCSU, such an atmosphere did not exist where the rivalries would go beyond moral concerns. The same goes to UNC. So for a closing note, a bashing statement like the ones mentioned here and in the article are simply pathetic in the eyes of a mature individual.
