To those in a fraternity, some questions

What does the pledging process usually consist of?

How time consuming is it being in a frat? Not much or a lot?

Are there a lot of parties and social events?

What is a good number of fraternities to look into if I want to ensure the best chances of getting accepted into at least one? And how exactly does that process work?

I’m not in a fraternity but since no one has answered yet, I’ll give some probably stupid answers but just observations since my roommate pledged in the fall of last year. Greek people, feel free to correct me!

I’m not exactly sure what the pledging process is after rush. I do know my roommate spent a lot of time driving people on the weekends (pledges get to do that) and doing yard work at his fraternity house. I’m not quite sure on the other details though.

Pledging is very time consuming process.

There are a lot of parties and social events. Definitely every weekend and sometimes even during the week!

I would recommend during rush to check out as many fraternities as you can. At Clemson, we have 2 days where fraternities will set up tents and you can go around to each tent and talk to members of the fraternity. After that, they’ll decide which people to invite back for other rush events and you go from there. So go check out and talk to as many people as you can. Plus, you can figure out which fraternity is the best fit for you.

Pledging consists of learning your fraternity’s history and your to-be brothers along with your pledge class. Every house/chapter has a different pledging process so just know that. There are some houses where the pledges have to sober drivers for the current brothers. Since most chapters have a function in their own house, you will most likely sober drive for other people.

Pledging is not really time consuming. The reason most people say it’s time consuming is because pledges always seem to be at the house. However, many pledges come back to the house to just chill and do homework with the brothers. People in fraternities do NOT drink all day from sunrise to sunset… We actually study and do homework as well since there are requirements.

This question depends on each house. Some houses may host more functions than other houses. So if your looking for a house that parties 24/7 then ask the Rush Chair, how many functions they host during an ordinary week. Some houses have more social $ than other houses.

I second pierre0913’s comment. Your school will most likely have a “Meet the Greeks” event where you get to see every fraternity on campus. I would recommend you rushing at LEAST five houses but if you like a certain house A LOT then cut your list down to three. Unless your POSITIVE that your going to get a bid from that certain house, make sure you rush the other houses as well.

Be yourself at the rush events. Don’t try to act cool and gangsta and all if thats not the real you. Welcome to college, you get a fresh new start. Remember that these people are going to be living with you for at least three years so don’t choose a house by it’s social functions and all. I recommend you choosing a house depending on how much you like the brothers.

Good Luck.

It depends a lot on your particular college.
