To those who got in....?

What were your SAT, ACT, Subject Test, etc. scores?

If you wouldn't mind also adding, what was your GPA roughly? How many APs, IB etc. did you take? How good were your ECs?

Thanks guys! I'm trying to get an idea of how I stack up.

34 ACT, 2010 SAT, 3.61UW GPA, 94.91 WGPA
10 AP’s. About the best EC’s I can think of (reasonably).

I think my why Cornell essay is why I get in. It was absolutely fantastic. I got rejected from every other top 20 school I applied to (besides UMich, but I believe that’s not top 25). Chose Cornell over McGill for financial reasons. Go figure… I’m also a Native American, so take that into account as well.

2320 SAT (superscore…2300 one sitting)
SAT IIs: 640 Bio, 720 Lit, 740 US Hist
97-98ish GPA weighted
5 APs
Good ECs I guess…two really strong leadership positions, a couple of long commitments, community service, internship

I’m half Asian and half Caucasian, not sure if that helped me much xD

I really wonder about the value of the information you might obtain from this survey. Statistics like average SAT scores are published every year by the university. CC does not provide an adequate sample of Cornell students, students who feel better about their qualifications (presumably with higher scores) are more likely to post, etc.

I suppose ECs and coursework might be a useful thing to ask about, but these are likely to vary a lot by college. As a prospective engineer, I won a few awards in math and science competitions, did a year of chem research but didn’t have enough time to publish, played in a lot of musical ensembles, wrote for my school’s literary magazine, and was President of a few clubs. Unfortunately no community service or organized sports. I took AP calc AB (took the BC exam), physics B (took the C exam), bio, US history, and English (that was all my school offered at the time).

Three different credentials and responses= Cornell student.

2280 SAT (800 reading, 790 writing, 690 math)
800s on both the chem and bio SAT IIs
5 on the bio AP and don’t know my score yet for the chem AP (my school doesn’t allow APs until 11th grade which is why I have less than other people)
94.2 average (unweighted) at a “gifted” high school that sends a pretty large number of people to Cornell each year (this year it was 12)
ECs were cross-country/track and summer internships – at the library, at an environmental center, a horticulture internship and an internship in a cancer research lab (this last one was probably a major contributing factor in me getting in)
my essay was pretty good, or at least my English teacher said it was.
this is for CALS btw which I heard was easier to get into?

I’ll give you some sample data from a waitlistee (me!) for some more perspective:

SAT: N/A
ACT: 35
Subject Test: 800, 800, 780 (chem, mathII, USH respectively)
GPA: 3.7 UW, top 5% at a competitive public (strong upward trend, though)
Courseload: 8 APs (10 tests, all 5s so far) and MV Calc/Linear algebra senior year
How good were your ECs? Decent imo. Science olympiad national medalist, varsity golf and volunteer golf coach, and math/science tutor (volunteer and private) were the significant ones.

Why I didn’t get in? Probably a mixture of no research, me applying to CoE, presumed lack of interest (my essay for cornell engineering was pretty standard for any engineering school), and my common app essay (controversial to say the least). No one from my school got into Cornell CoE (~12 into rest of school), so I don’t really know what it takes.

ACT: 35
Subject Tests: Math IIc 800, Physics 730
GPA: 3.86 UW, 4.46 W, Top 5% at an ACTUAL competitive public (“Actual” as in my school ranks in the USNWR top 100.)
Courseload: 10 APs
ECs: A lot of leadership, even at state/regional levels

SAT I: 2350
ACT: 35
Subjects: 800 Math IIC, 800 Physics, 750 USH
GPA: 3.87 UW at VERY competitive public (school ranks in USNWR Top 10)
Courseload: 7 AP classes, 12 AP tests (most classes I could take)
Extra Currics: 3 Varsity sports, Captain for 1, SoCal JSA Cabinet, Red Cross Chapter Board Member, MUN USG with multiple Best Delegations, 500+ hrs coaching jr high sports, high school band, Cultural Club president, few internships
Recs: Excellent
Essays: hard to judge my own essays. I thought they were pretty good.

Obviously didn’t get in by GPA; most of my stuff was extra currics and essays/letters.

SAT I: 2130
-Math 800
-Writing 670
-Crit. Reading 660
Math IIC: 790
US History: 590
Lit: 590
Did not take ACT

Weighted GPA: 3.82
Unweighted GPA: 3.21
APs: 12 (European History, CompSci A, Calc AB, Calc BC, Stats, US History, Earth Science, English Language, English Lit, Psych, Macro Econ, US Government)
ECs: On board of 3 clubs senior year, 2 years of sports, lots of volunteer work, worked 8-12 hrs/wk junior year, worked 24-32 hrs/wk senior year, did summer internship between junior and senior year.

I hope this helps since I don’t look that great on paper (particularly my SAT IIs and GPA).

thanks everyone! anyone else?

i really appreciate everyone posting! its definitely helpful and helps me put my stats/ECs into perspective

ACT: 30
SAT: didn’t take but 2160 on several school practice tests.
Math2: 770
Chem: 680
GPA: 3.72 uw though i ended freshmen year with a 1.5 so it showed quite an improvement
school only offerred like 3 AP’s and i took 2 dual credit classes at local university.
essays were pretty good imo
ec’s: several volunteer things, officer of a few clubs, research over the summer at SouthWest Research Institute, studied with a math prof at trinity university in problem solving with number theory, a few awards.
Accepted: CAS- mathematics major
I chose Cornell over Uchicago and Emory for financial reasons, and I am happy with the choice.

Lots of people seem to be doing research things. Honestly, not one person I know or in my area has done this. Is this bad?

if its not available in your area, it definitely wont hurt. not everyone lives in an area where they can do research at a university or lab

check the official 2013 cornell decision pages. They’re much more detailed

click on “applicant stats”…

Isn’t this impossible? If its UW then a 1.5 freshman year with a 4.0 sophmore, junior, and senior year would still only be a 3.375…

790 M 770 CR 700 W (and they aren’t allowed to use the Writing, so this was awesome)
770 Physics, 800 Math II
4.384 W, 3.984 UW (8 APs) 3rd in a class of 304
Physics B 5 Calc AB 5 US History 4 (waiting on the rest)
All-Region football player and team captain my senior year
Some volunteer work, not a ton though. Mostly Relay for Life stuff
National Merit Scholar Finalist, no money though :frowning:
White (mostly Italian)
Legacy, 3rd generation Cornell Engineer

no, roneald
because according to some texas university thing, our school is accredited with an extra 0.3 added to the gpa for 98 and above in classes. So potentially i could end up with a 4.3 gpa, though i’m unaware of how such exceptions add into the unweighted gpa process, but my final transcript includes my unweighted gpa as 3.72–maybe they’ve confused unweighted with weighted.

^I did some calculations, and I ASSUMED you took 3 classes freshman year (1.5 GPA) and 6 classes sophomore, junior, and senior year each (with straight As), and your UW GPA only gets to a 3.64, if I did the math correctly. So your school must be doing something to the calculation, whether that is weighting it, dropping freshman year, adding the .3, or something else entirely.
