To those who went to orientation: Did your parents

1)Did your parents went to the family orientation?. Any feedbacks?
2) How was the accommodation at Rieber Vista? Did they assign roommates randomly or by major?
3) What social activities did they line up for you guys
4) Is your OC friendly, helpful, patient...

5) do we get to see other dorms or are they locked up?

I'm a parent who went to the first orientation, and can tell you what it was like. Unless you are very uninformed, there isn't a lot of new information. It was more a chance to meet other parents and share thoughts and feelings about what all this is like, especially for those of us who are going through a child leaving home for the first time. The tour was fun, as we were initiated into some fun ucla traditions, which I won't mention, to not spoil it for others. You get a chance to ask questions about whatever you need, so you can fill in whatever information is lacking. There was a feeling overall, of making us feel as though we are part of the Bruin family, too, not just our student going to ucla. I enjoyed it, and suggest to check out the modern art exhibit at the Hammer museum which is free during the summer. Also, the Geffen theater is showing an incredibly powerful play by Sam Shepard about the current administration in DC and the war, and it's effect on typical americans. Lots of fun to be had in Westwood.

no they had to work

roommates were assigned by alphabetical order... the accomodations in a triple plaza with a shared bathroom aint pretty. but we gotta live with it.

an anti USC cabaret put on by OC staff, a midnight scavenger hunt... besides that, we were on our own for social events

the OCs are okay. they do their job. nothing exceptional.

i think the bruincard swipes you into any dorm but you wont see any rooms unless someone lets you in

Thanks Kira_mom and Namaste.

Kira_mom: which housing did they show you. In my previous visit, I have seen Dysktra double and De Neve double. In this orientation, I would like to see Sunset Village-triple. I like to see the layout of the room and get an idea on what to bring for the move-in. If this not possible, I am thinking I would just go to SV, introduce myself and hope that someone would be nice and accomodating enough to let me see their room.

that's a link to a plaza lay out in case you haven't already seen it.

aww c'mon guys, be appreciative that you guys get such nice and new dorms -- for orientation!

i had rieber my orientation year.

i thought reiber vista was a pretty nice dorm. Bathrooms are clean, there is airconditioning and everything looks very clean and new.

Yeah, please, if you think that rieber vista is bad... then every dorm room at UCLA is just as bad or worse. It's a new building (only been through a year of abuse) and has the most spacious rooms.

momca25: SV rooms are going to vary a bit depending which building. However, it'll be very similar to De Neve, but maybe slightly more spacious. Double and triple rooms have no differences except for the furniture set, which takes up the same amount of floor space.

vista was a great place to stay for orientation...i appreciated it =)

Momca25- I saw the Hedrick Hall dorms, set up for three students, which made it pretty crowded, but I guess you don't spend much time in your room, anyhow. I didn't in college, and was either in the lounges or somewhere else on campus. Each desk had a shelf arrangement on it, and there is closet space for everyone, but there isn't much drawer space. Hedrick was airconditioned in the public areas, but not the rooms. There was a good breeze though, and it wasn't hot inside, even though it was a warm day. They even had three mannequins in the room, maybe to show us that three students could fit, but it was funny, one of them was stuck in the corner, which may not have given the impression they wanted!
