Sorry, but it’s not looking good. Several people had asked on this forum before whether they had much of a chance of being admitted off the waitlist, and I figured I’d let you know the current numbers (and keep you updated over the next few days). If you’re wondering, the numbers are from the official Class Facebook (https://cms.amherst.edu/people/students/2011/facebook). So far, 370 students have confirmed their place in the Amherst Class of 2011, and since it’s only May 2, I assume that the remaining ~30 places will be filled up soon. But I’m sure you all have other excellent colleges to choose from, and you’ll get a great education wherever you go, because you are bright, motivated, talented students!

I don’t want to squish your hope entirely, because there is still a chance! Just not a huge one.

how do you log in? How do you get a log in - i just accepted my acceptance - can I yet?

From the Amherst Student Newspaper: "The College offered admission to 1,167 students from 47 states and 50 countries in the early- and regular- decision rounds out of a total 6,669 applicants; an eight percent increase in applicants over last years pool. The admission rate hit a record low 17.5 percent. The Office of Admission hopes 306 students will choose to join the 134 students admitted early decision for a class of 440 students."

Those waitlisted may still have a chance.

Amherst was hoping for:
RD: 306
ED(Binding): 134
Total: 440

People who have accepted a place: 370(This is ED+RD, i suppose)

This mens they'll still take 70 off the waitlist.

Am i right?

And can people send in their deposit after 2 may?

since it's only may 3, there are definitely a decent number of confirmations still in the mail en route to amherst...i expect the number of confirmed spots to go up.

Ditto to zspot9. Sorry, I wasn't aware that Amherst was looking for 440; I thought it was more like 400.

Footballyus, your username & password are the same you used to check your application status...at least it was yesterday. Today I'm having trouble logging in, so I can't access the class facebook to see how many have now confirmed their place. I will let you know ASAP if I can get back on!

Edit: As of May 3, 12:33 PM EST, 408 students have confirmed their place. More confirmations will probably be coming in the mail at least today and tomorrow, possibly longer.

You're forgetting about summer melt. Every year, several enrolled students who were waitlisted at other top schools renege on their Amherst matriculation (and forfeit their deposit) after getting into their top choice off the waiting list.

lavendercloud: Can you please check that how many have accepted a place till today?

Thanks

They have over-enrolled?

thus far 445 have accepted the offer of admission

Yep, 445. And it's May 4, so it's possible that more confirmations could arrive - but due to summer melt the class will probably end up at about 440. I'm amazed at how they work it out so that they're so close to having the exact right number of people.

so if 445 already confirmed that means.. no students off the waitlist right? :)

456
Looks like it could still get higher. Maybe to 470-480 range.
I would keep my grades up if I was an admitted student this year!

Where did you get the 445 number Lavendercloud? Yesterday the school's web page said 370, but now that same web page is not available to the general public. (Presumably because someone in the admissions office reads the postings on CC.)

It is available to current students and the class of 2011.

Does anyone know how accepted students can log into the class Facebook? I forgot what my username and password were to check the status of my application, and I see no option to have that information emailed to you..

It should still be in your e-mail, unless you deleted it, in which case actually there is an option to have it e-mailed. And your username is your first initial, last name, 11 (for instance, I'm nsmith11).

And crapola...do you really think they'll be kicking out people with low grades? Will a couple of C's hurt if I score 5s on the corresponding AP tests?

I was just kidding. You should be OK.
It would depend on the housing and I believe they have more than enough housing to accommodate all.
