To transfer, or not to transfer, that is the question

I'm confused. I'm considering transferring to and was wondering if any of you guys could give me some insight or opinions.

I'm currently in my 2nd semester at UMich. I'm pre-business and planning on applying to the business school at the end of this year. Unfortunately, I will not know if I get into the business school until summertime. I'm happy the academics here, they are quite challenging and I ended my first semester with a 3.5. I'm expecting to better second semester but the business school is pretty competitive and difficult to get into. I don't know if I will get in...to be honest.

Real quick breakdown on my academic abilities:
HS GPA = 3.8 (tough courseload, full of APs/honors, whatever)
ACT = 34
ECs = interned at Ameriprise Financial summer between college/hs, prez/founder MUN, prez robotics, captain tennis, state winner ping pong, national merit semifinalist

My backup major is Computer Science. Unfortunately, UM's Computer Science department is lacking, when compared with other departments. I just feel that if I don't get into the business school, my backup major will not be as strong academically as other universities.

I'm in-state, which means I pay only 10grand for tuition. I'm not totally happy with the social life here at UM. I feel "disconnected", as someone earlier put it I'm having trouble finding a group of people I truly like. I have no problem making friends and know tons of people here day but I just feel out of place....I feel like there are a ton of cliches and I don't fit in any of them. I like the campus also. What's killing me is my feeling of discontent, I don't have any close friends and can't find any people I really connect to and get along with. I'm involved in many clubs, and currently getting involved with the Greek society.

The dilemma comes down to this: do I waste valuable time applying for a transfer to another school (i'm considering NYU Stern and CMU, which costs about 30grand more than UM) on the chance I do not make it into the business school? Someone help me make a decision. Also, what other schools should I consider?

How badly do you want to study business at UM? If you do get in, will you still consider transferring out? If the answer is no, then maybe you should just wait and see. I actually think you should wait before you decide in any case...you might start to feel more at home after a second semester. Good luck!

I really want to study business at UM and if I get into the business school I will definately not be transferring. However, I don't hear back from the business school until summer and the application isn't even due until April. Therefore, I don't want to miss the transfer deadline and have to wait out another year at UM before being able to transfer if I don't get in.

Ross business school is competitive, but not that competitive. A 3.5 should get you in if you took the required (mandatory) courses.

I'd just keep your grades up in the Spring Semester and stop worrying so much.

If, however, you want to have backups, then apply to NYU Stern and apply to CMU. The application fees are fairly low, and you are likely to get your reply from them before you get your reply from Ross. If either is a yes, then you have a choice of staying at UMich and taking Computer Science or transferring to the other school for business.

Don't let the time you take applying distract you from your studies, though--because if you don't keep up the grades you won't be able to get into any of these places;--and if you do keep up the grades, then you'll have your choice of where to go.

Good luck.
