I'm deciding between Dartmouth, Brown, and Northwestern. I'm at least 95% sure that I'm going to either Dartmouth or Brown. (My mom refuses to believe I would choose Northwestern.)

I haven't visited any of the campuses yet; I'm planning to do so over spring break. My mom has agreed to take me to see Dartmouth and Brown. However, my mom said if I want to visit Northwestern, I have to pay for that part of the trip myself. (It's inconvenient because NU is far from Dartmouth and Brown.) It would amount to $200 or $300 in airfares, plus another $100 for a hotel because we'd have to prolong our visit.

I would love to visit Northwestern to see the campus, but is it frivolous to do that when I practically know I won't be going to Northwestern? -_-

I clearly see that your mom hates NU...so, no, I wouldn't bother to visit NU. Save the airfare money to buy yourself a couple of ps3 games.

Go watch the new Disney movie "College Road Trip" which has about 30 minutes of footage on Northwestern. It's one of 3 colleges on the road trip (Pitt and Georgetown are the other two).

Go see Northwestern.

Spend a few hundred dollars to give yourself the peace of mind that you made the right choice and that you won't look back years from now and wonder. Hopefully, you'll only choose a college once in your life so get it right the first time.

Plus, you will discover that Evanston and the Northwestern campus is beautful and that nearby Chicago is great, great fun and a MAJOR difference from Hanover and Providence.

years ago I was in a similar situation deciding between schools I'd been accepted to. Do the Dartmouth/Brown trip, then decide if the NU trip is still needed. In my case, I didn't need to visit the far-away final campus.

^ I don't think that's possible, because I want to book the flights soon.
