To wait for an AA degree or not to wait... ?

I appreciate any advice to my current problem. I'm a community college student that is looking to transfer to Florida Gulf Coast University. I have 7 classes left to take, 4 which will be completed in the summer, and then i'll have a remaining 3 classes. If I wait, i'll be transfering in the spring session. I would rather go sooner than later especially because my long-term boyfriend will be going then. I had a really bad high school record with a 2.1 GPA from moving to four high schools in the middle of the year. I also did poorly on the SATs all scores are in the 460's area. On the brightside though, in college I have a GPA of 3.6 and made the dean's list. The school is looking to grow being very new and I heard its not very selective at all. Would you suggest finishing CC or trying to transfer to be a lower divison tranfer? Thanks in advance!!

Since you’re applying to FGCU, I’d say just transfer. It’s not like you’re transferring to UF or UM. Those schools have very strict guidelines. FGCU doesn’t seem selective. I was told that I’m going to get in and qualify for many of their scholarships if I apply. I wouldn’t base your decision on someone your dating though. Make a decision because it’s what you want to do.

I agree 100%

Thank you, I appreciate that. I figured that I might have a shot transferring early to this school, but not the others that are selective like you said. I am not going to FGCU because of my boyfriend, we both have had these plans before we met. It would be hard to be apart while I’m waiting to obtain an AA from a CC and he is already at school. It just makes more sense to go at the same time, so I don’t have to be jealous. Thanks again!

Does your school have a transfer advisor? You have a very respectable GPA, and with two years in CC, schools will look at that more that HS. I think you should be considering more colleges. Good luck.

My school has an advisor, but when I went she wasn’t as helpful with that as I thought. She just read off the Universities website, which isn’t much help since I lack in all the testing and high school factors of being a before an AA transfer. My parents want me to go to a Florida school and most of them have a big student population. I learn better in smaller classes, therefore FGCU is a better option for me.

Just an update - they said I couldn’t transfer until I receive an AA, I spoke to the undergraduate admissions. Thanks for you suggestions, unfortunately the outcome isn’t what I wish.

I think u should consider UMiami, u got a 3.6 and if u got 30 credits u would also have a good shot since they wont look at HS

Aw, try USF! Or I guess wait until you get your AA. USF accepted me with 30 credits, so I’m sure if you want to transfer that bad you could try that institution. Good luck to you!

Why did they say you needed an AA? Something about you or just their general policy? I got into USF with 32 credits like lavender but it is a very big school.

Pretty off-topic, but my friend is the goalie for the FGCU hockey team. I know he transferred from Hudson-Valley Community College last year but I don’t know what his grades at his CC looked like.

They said I needed an AA because of my high school GPA and my SATs scores aren’t up to par with there standards which would prevent me from getting in. My college grades would ensure me to get in, but they don’t look past your high school gpa/sat scores until after you obtain an AA. I think the reason you guys got early acceptance is because your GPA and SATs weren’t as pathetic as mind. I’ll look into the school USF but I kind of think the only fitting school is FGCU because I am afraid that I can’t handle a big social life and school.

Coolio - I love hockey,I’ll be at all the games. My boyfriend is moving there without me to make the team in the fall.

Haha that’s awesome. My friend’s trying to get me to transfer there next year and I’m considering applying there. We’ve both lived in Upstate New York our whole lives so he loves the weather.

That’s pretty cool you should! I’m from Long Island, Ny but I moved to Florida 3 years ago. I couldn’t imagine going to school in NY even though I love it there. Unlike upstate we don’t get the snow or cold weather, I know you used to it and there are good schools around there, but you really should consider a Florida school. High school is better in NY, but college is better in Florida. You should come visit your friend to decide, once I visited FGCU, I knew it was a perfect match.

Haha yea. I’m getting so tired of this weather. It snowed last year during finals…IN LATE APRIL! I’m definitely going to consider applying to FGCU
