to Xiggi, does 99% = semifinalist psat.

i got 99%. does it mean semifinalist. I feel that you are the most knowledgeable person on this forum. Is there such a thing as 99.5%+? If so, what is the basis for semifinalist? Can a person with 99% still not be a semifinalist?

semifinalist is based on each state. the search button does wonders.

You can be in the 99th percentile and not be a semifinalist.

There is such thing as 99.5th percentile -- just as there is such thing as 99.6th percentile, and 86.252nd percentile... but obviously the score reports are not that exact.

The top one-half percent (by state) are semifinalists -- so yes, anyone in 99.5 percentile or above.

Does anyone know what the score would be for top 99.5% for CA?

or just to those seniors who got to semifinalist, what was their score?

I think CA is around 215. There are exact cutoffs per state floating around CC on various threads.

EDIT: copied from the "PSAT results are in" thread (only copying what's posted there, don't shoot the messenger if these stats aren't correct! Anyway, I think some are off because I know someone who got a 214 in MN last year and got NMSF. According to this, the cutoff was 215 so that can't be right. Anyway, my guess is that these stats are pretty close for the most part.)

annie: Thanks for this info. Can you please tell me where you obtained this data so I can check it out . I am in PA and I got 217 this year. Thank you very much. Dana

CA was 217 for 2005.

THe info's been floating around on the web and also on several CC threads. I'm not entirely sure of its accuracy, but all the numbers are within the ballpark.

see thread http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=74297
post #202 for details.

does anyone know the semifinalist cutoff for c/o 2007 CALIFORNIA??

The cutoff scores for this year are released sometime in September.

i was 99% in 10th grade and didnt make it - i live in nj

Yes, given that NJ has a cutoff score of 222 (as does MD, where I live, grr...) 99% probably doesn't cut it. But in 10th grade, 240 doesn't cut it either.

Fermat....

Your score as a 10th grader doesn't count AT ALL -- even if you got a perfect score. Your score as an 11th grader is the only one that counts. Good luck in October.

that's not necessarily true - if you are doing early admissions (such as myself) then you can opt to have your 10th grade score count
