I need money to go to college, plain and simple. I just turned 16, and just got my Associates degree from a Community College and my High School diploma at the same time. I've been homeschooled. My goal is to finish my studies at Michigan State University and then hopefully go on to Mass. Inst. of Tech. to furter my studes in Physics and Math.
My dad lost his job a few months ago, and my mom is working full time to pay tuition for my college and my little brother's Christian School tuition. My little sister goes to public school. There just isn't enough income, yet we don't qualify for a needs-based scholarship.

I realized today that I may not be able to go to MSU in the fall because of the finances. We thought I could get a lot of scholarships, but realize now that being an accomplished, driven teen does not mean a thing when applying. I'm just one of many (older) kids with a great GPA and a drive to get a degree.
What do I do now??

Did you take the Michigan Merit Exams and qualify for the Michigan Merit monies or did you use those for CC? Do you need room and board or are you commuting to MSU? If you are not community is there a 4 yr institution within commuting distance? Did you apply anywher else other than MSU? Northern Michigan is very generous with aid and has a sliding scale based on ACT and GPA if you are looking for a general BA. Have you filed an FAFSA? Have you talked to the Finaid office at MSU?

Michigan State is abut $17K/yr if you’re in state. Working 2 jobs this summer and working during the school year should get you $6K and you borrow some of the rest and your parent’s hopefully borrow some. That’s how lots of kids are doing it.

Where do you live? Does your CC have articulation agreements with any 4 year colleges? I may have some ideas for you if you answer these two questions …

Momofthreeboys, OP most likely did not do the MME/ACT. Unfortunately, many home schooled students do not do the testing. It can be done at a local high school, but so many families don’t realize that they don’t have to be public school students to take the exam at a local public school.

Did you let MSU’s Fin Aid office know about this? If not, please call them and ask what they need to do a special circumstance review. It may help you get more need based aid.

Maybe you can see if one of the colleges have spots and aid available. If you are 16 with a 2 year degree, that shows some above average ability.

MSU has a lot of funding for people whose parent’s lost jobs. Contact them! Trust me, I know from personal experience that they want to help you go there.

If your mom is the sole source of support for a family of 5, you need to tell the university so they can reevaluate your fin aid package. Hope you can earn lots of money this summer to help pay for your college.

Please let us know how things work out for you!
