TN here. This was my first real ACT, but I’ve taken many practice tests before.

English: I thought this was about the same as normal. I’d never seen the “replace the word” or “which word doesn’t fit” questions before, though, so that threw me for a loop. Overall, I think I did quite well, which is normal for me on the English section.

Math: Ok, compared to every practice test I’ve ever taken, this math section was as hard, if not harder, than any other. Maybe it’s just me, but they seemed to deviate from the ACT feel this time. I actually felt more like I was taking the SAT math for a while, because instead of the standard know-it-or-you-don’t problems, there seemed to be a lot more logic problems. I wasn’t prepared for all the logic stuff, so I ran out of time, which has never happened to me before on a practice test. It’s not that I wouldn’t have been able to figure out the problems, I just didn’t have enough time to think them through. Math is my best subject, but I don’t feel too great about this one.

Reading: Reading and Science have caused me the most trouble in the past. Today, I actually thought the Reading wasn’t too bad. I dedicated a lot of time last week to figuring out how to balance my time reading the passage vs answering the questions. This time I was able to finish with about 2 minutes left. Overall, I thought it was easier than most tests I’ve taken before.

Science: I think the difficulty that everyone’s talking about came from the lengthy passages at the beginning of EVERY section. I realized that I was spending waaaay too much time reading them and started just skipping to the questions after a quick glance. It wasn’t too bad once I started ignoring the useless crap at the beginning until the questions actually called for it. I usually do pretty bad on the science section, so I’m hoping today will be different. I had to guess on the last two, but I’m quite confident with my answers for every question prior to those.

Writing: As far as I know, TN doesn’t pay for the writing part, which really irritates me. Since I’m looking at top schools that require the writing test, this entire ACT was basically a practice test for me. If your state pays for it, be very thankful.
